Cheap Way of Getting to Split, Croatia?
« on: April 28, 2008, 08:25:59 PM »
Hi all,

I think I already know the answer to this, but does anybody know of a cheap way to get to Split, Croatia in July?  All the cheap airlines' fares are in the £250-£300 range, and that's more than I'd like to spend.

thanks,
Carl

They have a great bus system.  We flew into, well Vienna, but took a bus from Zadar.  It was cheap, seemed safe and fast.

Have a look at the surrounding airports including the ones in Italy. I took a ferry from Ancona to Zadar then a bus down to Dubrovnik.

Sometimes you just have to sacrifice convenience if you are trying to be frugal but when pushed for time and like convenience. You have to think if the extra cost is worth it in the end... usually it is.  :)

Thanks, y'all!  Don't know what I'm going to do yet, but it's nice to have some other options.

Gorgeous, albeit scary at times, views winding along the coast line.

It looks like you can go Stanstead to Trieste (in Italy) for something like £60-70 on Ryanair.  According to one website I found you can get a bus from Trieste to Split, although it takes 10.5 hours!  Not sure how much of an inconvenience you're willing to have to avoid paying for the direct flight?

I took a ferry from Dubrovnik to Rejika, which is right on the border of Italy, and then a bus from Rejika to Venice.

I wouldn't try a long distance bus.  It was the most frustrating thing in the universe.  The ferries all arrived around 9:15 and all the buses and trains left at 3:00pm, except for the ones that had left 10 minutes before everyone arrived.  It was so much waiting around, wasting time, being bored.  You'd think they would be better coordinated.  Oh well, a boost to the local economy I suppose.
