Strange Directline doesn't require a british license, just international is fine.  Although sometimes it depends on who you speak to as they are all idiots.

Just making an update.

I have found a car for myself (Fiat Cinquecento Sporting), and have gone to Directline, Tesco, Post Office and QUINN for insurance quotes as you guys have suggested.

Everyone gladly offered to insure me, EXCEPT Directline! They did not want to insure me until I had a British License (GRRR!!  >:(), which was disappointing. But! Post Office won me out for under 500 quid insurance for a full year with all the bells and whistles I needed :)

Thanks for your help guys! You saved me hours and hours of work, and I cannot thank you enough :) You all are peaches  8)
