pots & pans
« on: May 01, 2008, 01:09:45 PM »
can anyone recommend a decent, reasonably priced set of pots & pans? the ones we got for a wedding gift two years ago are on their last legs, mostly because dh insists on overcooking everything & charring the bottoms of the non-stick coated ones.

I got a brilliant set of saucepans from Wilko a couple of years ago. The brand is "intwo" and it was less than a tenner for 3 solid stainless steel pans with glass lids.

Define "reasonably priced"  ;)

I have this set:

I bought it nearly 5 years ago and, coincidentally, I was putting two of them away this morning and thinking how well they've lasted - they're definitely work horses and won't need to be replaced anytime soon!!

I bought these over 2 years ago...and they still look and shine like new...even tho I have had the odd burnt food accident (some serious ones 8)  )..they still clean up really easily with a brillo pad......I think they were actually better than my old Le Creuset ones I had to leave behind.  Much lighter to pick up thats for sure!!..

Mind you..with these you don't get as much of a impact on unruley husbands heads as if you hit them with these pans as you would do with a nice cast iorn Le Creuset frypan!  ;)

Our saucepans are about 12 years old and came from Ikea.  I gave up on pots and pans with non stick coating years ago-they never seem to last.

TK Maxx usually has some nice-looking pans, but you're not as likely to get a "set"--and with a newborn I don't know how much time or energy you have for shopping. :-\\\\

Stainless without nonstick coating is a good thing, IMO, especially if the husband has ruined nonstick within two years.  :o  ;D Something that's either fully clad (basically a thick layer of aluminum sandwiched between stainless steel) or that has a nice hefty disk-bottom construction will give you better heat conduction and might help keep the husband from overcooking things quite so badly.

I could go on and on, but I won't unless you want me to. ;) Myself, I have mostly Cuisinart Multiclad, but I don't think they're available over here, alas.

oh, feel free to go on & on!!

i worked in the housewares department of a big department store & always fantasised about owning a $700 set of stainless all-clad. alas, that's never to be...

I second this.  Rich had some before we got married (four years ago) and we got some at the wedding as well.  Still all looking great.

(Great price for four pieces!  WOW!)

That's what we have plus one other pan and I love them.

Heh heh...when I decided I had to buy some good pans, I looked at All-Clad, but the price! :o And I hated the handles. So I got the Cuisinart, which is the same construction, a third the price, and has nicer handles. ;D Love it. And I expect it'll last me the better part of a lifetime, if not more.

I'm reasonably sure I've seen some fully clad pieces at TK Maxx, but I don't remember what brands. Will have a look next time I'm there, which is often, if you're interested. :P

My advice would be to look for a few pieces, the ones you use most often, and buy the best quality you can afford. I couldn't believe the difference it made, going from a set of much-abused hand-me-down Revereware. No more burnt onions!

I have 1 pot like that, which we got as a wedding gift & they are really nice.  At some point, I'd like to get a set.

Apart from that, my best cookware recommendation will always be:  plain old cast iron (not the enamelled kind, ex - Le Creuset).  I'm not sure how cheap/expensive they are over here, but they will last you for more than one lifetime - so value for money is unsurpassed really.  I have cast iron that belonged to my grandma and my mom.  And they're multi-purpose - you can build muscle lifting them (heavy!) and use for self-defense as well (bong!). :)

There are few Le Creuset Factory Outlet stores here in the UK if you decide cast iron is for you.  Here is the address list and contact numbers....Much Cheaper than most Retail outlets....you may end up getting a colour thats not currently in standard shops but you can always buy odds and bits from ebay..

Le Creuset also sell their own brand of Pan Wash cream cleaner which is fab on any really really super baked cooked on marks...I have used it before on all sorts of pans...Its like miracle cream!

OOoo - Just noticed they have Denby factory outlets also... ;D Happy Days!
