are you missing Velveeta?
« on: May 03, 2008, 01:46:44 PM »
I don't like Velveeta, but i know that many of you do, and I saw something weird in Asda this morning that i thought might be worth a try if you're looking for a Velveeta substitute.

It's in the Carribean section and is called Grace 'mild processed cheese'.  It's in a red can.

Who's going to be first to try it?   :)

They also had big bags of polenta for making cornbread, and big bags of those crispy fried onions.

Okay, this will gross most of you out, but in our endeavor to find Velveeta in the UK, we experimented with the processed cheese slices you can buy for sandwiches.  I mean, really, they're practically the same, right?  Well, a package of those plus milk and salsa actually makes a decent queso!!  It's not Velveeta, nor am I saying it tastes IDENTICAL, but it's a good substitute in my opinion.  Would be good for an afternoon party or something where you'd normally have queso.  Not sure how it would work over something like broccoli or macaroni, since we have only tested it as a dip.  I give it a thumbs up!

I've totally done that.  Dairylea slices are a good stand-in if you miss Velveeta-type nacho cheese, with a little jalapeno added in.
I refuse to answer that question on the grounds that I don't know the answer.

Yup we do that whenever we have nachos. My husband was amazed! [smiley=laugh4.gif]
I'm thinking about getting metal legs. It's a risky operation, but it'll be worth it.

I guess it's just what you grew up with... we never had Velveeta in the house as a kiddie, so i never developed the taste for it.   We always ate real melted cheese on nachos and pasta.

Same here. I never even tasted Velveeta until I was an adult.  :-\\\\

and i think you have to get the taste for it as a child and develop a 'habit', cos like me and chary, if you taste it first as an adult... it's not nice!  :-X
