It turns out quite good, but unfortunately Doritos are still no match for Tostitos! I would kill for these bad boys! :D

Tostitos are the best! Velveeta and Tostitos are going to be some of the few things that I will miss when I move. I could live off of chips and queso. But I did find tortilla chips and salsa at the grocery store over there, so I think I will make it.  :P

what's the difference?
I dont think i've ever had Tostitos...

The main difference is that Tostitos are much closer to just being a straight tortilla chip: the only flavor variation (not counting different sizes/shapes or multigrain vs. corn) is lime; with Doritos, the flavoring is the centerpiece: nacho cheese, cool ranch, spicy buffalo, jalapeno, etc.  All somewhat aggressive flavors when compared to lime or unflavored.  I believe that Tostitos generally use a higher quality corn (because they're not using a possibly overbearing spice to cover up the corn).

The end effect is that Doritos work much better than Tostitos on their own, without a sauce or dip (indeed, the only dip that I've found to work at all with most (not all) Doritos is sour cream... salsa tends to get overpowered by the Doritos and nacho cheese doesn't work that well either), while Tostitos practically require a dip, as they're even blander than plain potato crisps or Fritos (which in turn means that any of the three dips/sauces I listed earlier works fantastically with Tostitos, IMO).

From these threads, it appears that none of the three dips listed have wide availability in the UK, and I suspect that's why PepsiCo has made no effort to bring Tostitos over.

But what about plain Doritos? Is there a difference between those and Tostitos?

No way!  I don't know the exact ingredients of Cheez Whiz, but as you know, it sprays from a can.  Velveeta is in a foil wrapped block.

Yes!! Doritos are quite heavier and appear to be cooked for longer than Tostitos. Tostitos are much larger, but made to be a lot thinner so the taste is very light. They are made with all white corn and aren't as salty as Doritos.

They're 100x better than plain doritos!!!

No no no, Easy Cheese sprays from a can, Cheez Whiz comes in a jar!!  :D

Why do I know these things?!?!  :-\\\\

I'm thinking about getting metal legs. It's a risky operation, but it'll be worth it.

Oh--sorry about the Cheez misinformation!  :D  And you are totally right about Tostitos vs. Doritos!

Cheez, LOL!  That is hysterical.

I used to love that spray cheez crap when I went to camp.  We all begged for it on visiting day.  Funny thing is I never wanted it any other time, just in the summers I was at camp.  Shockingly, my mom would actually buy it for me! :o

Spray cheez?!?! What the ...?!?! I've never seen that!!

I don't do cheese in cans, tubes, etc., but has anyone tried that squirty cheese in a tube here? I don't even know what it's called. Anyway, I wonder if it might be a reasonable substitute for those of you who miss your weird American cheesy products.

Yes, I definitely agree with those who posted about Tostitos!  It's been so long since I've had them though - I've learned to make do with the plain Doritos - but oh they are so salty & not really the same.  Good thing I don't have it very often.

Thanks for explaining the difference between Doritos & Tostitos.
I think i'd prefer whichever is thicker... for dipping, i think you need a thicker crisp.  That's why i usually buy tortilla chips from Lupe Pintos... they are 'restaurant style' and thick and sturdy for holding a load of dip!

If you're talking about the 'toothpaste' looking tube cheese, then yes, and I love it!  I don't buy it often though.

That would be Primula.  It's not like "cheez" in the US, more like a cross between a swiss and cream cheese.  Luuuvely.
I refuse to answer that question on the grounds that I don't know the answer.

My friend took a picture of that stuff at Sainsbury's because the picture on the tube was a mouse fishing for a huge prawn. It was pretty hilarious!
