Food prices going up and up!
« on: May 04, 2008, 09:51:17 AM »
There's been quite a lot in the media about the cost of food going up a lot, just wondered if you'd noticed anything in particular. I nearly puked paying 99p for an iceberg lettuce this week. 99p!!!!

99p for an iceberg lettuce, that is ridiculous, but then 9p would be too much for me for one! Bland and tasteless - I prefer the bags of leaves.

Anyway - £1.09 for a loaf of in-store baked granary bread from Asda yesterday, put it in the freezer and my last loaf in there (from Morrison's) was 79p!

But some things balance it up - fresh salmon fillet was on offer - I got a big piece (about 1lb) and it was just £1.60! It will do me 3 meals and I usually pay about that much for 1 meal!

I've noticed the price of eggs DEFINATELY went way up.  And I used to be able to get a bumper pack of peppers for 99p but now they're around £1.20-£1.50... with single large peppers alone being about £0.70p!! 70p for 1 pepper!!!!  And i do notice the difference at the checkout of what i used to pay as opposed to now... so I've started planning my meals for the week around whats on offer.... which seems to be working quite well.  For example Dolmio lasagne sauces were on buy 1 get 1 free at morrisons this week so I made a large lasagne one night for dinner this week.  But then on the Lasagne note... the price of mince also seems to have gone up from £2 for a large pack of lean mince to £2.30... so basically everything is going up in price  >:( .

Agree on butter - it's outrageous!! I've definitely noticed the grocery bill going up in the past few months. It's a massive challenge to get quality food for a reasonable price. Between this and petrol I'll NEVER get out of my overdraft.  >:(

I think that's how I'm going to have to start shopping.

oh god, i know... petrol.
with all that Grangemouth strike business over the last couple of weeks, I was lucky to get petrol, and got to pay £1.11 / litre for the privilege.  Diesel was £1.24!

That's about what it is down here too. It's shocking. Even the comparatively cheap station I usually go to was at £1.10 last week. I'm hoping they're just taking advantage of the strike and the 3-day-weekend. I HOPE that's the case 'cause I'm running on fumes right now and will have to fill up on Tuesday for sure.  :-\\\\

I stand corrected! Just got back from Morrisions and a bumper pack of peppers (4 medium to small peppers) are now £1.99 and for 1 large single pepper £0.99!! 99p for 1 lousey pepper!  :o

I think I'm going to grow these this summer as DH and I eat a lot of peppers!

I find cheese is really expensive and we eat a lot of it.

I posted about this yonks ago, its all due to the raising price of grain around the world. Butter used to be .72p, now its anywhere from .92p to £1.20!!

We're getting most of our staples from Lidl now.

And growing stuff in the garden - tomatoes, strawberries, blueberries, courgettes, peas and herbs.

Have a HUGE rosemary bush and have started lavender as well for scenting things.

Butter's extortionate.  I used to get Yeo Valley, now I get whatever is on offer.  I like the bake.

I'd have chickens if this place were ours, but alas.  Also they eat whatever you are growing so they have to be well-segregated from your crop.

I am jealous.  We have a tiny house with a tiny kitchen and a tiny fridge.  So I have no room to store anything on sale and there are no Lidls or Aldis in my area.

Oh, there's no Lidl in this area, either.

In fact, all there is a small Co-Op and Somerfield 13 miles away.

We take a ferry and drive once a month to stock up on staples from Lidl and get the rest from a farmer's market in the town.

That is a bummer.  Do you at least have lots of storage for stuff?

I'm doing grocery shopping in like 3 places now in order to cut down what we're spending, veg seems to have gotten really expensive and rice is ridiculous!
I'm getting all my rice, veg and ethnic stuff from Taj (which is a funny ethnic supermarket nd also has A&W root beer, fluffer nutter/marshmallow fluff, good tortillas, jalapenos etc). Sainsburys is delivering most of my stuff but I'm very much planning the weekly shop around the "great offers!" section and getting coke and stuff from a discounted brands shop.

I used to be able to do a good few weeks for £40, now £40 barely lasts a week and it's getting harder and harder not to buy tinned rubbish or frozen rubbish and actually cook meals :(
