The first few years in Japan I had a 1R near Shibuya.. no storage space, a teensy bar fridge, no oven.. so when it came time to buy something I may have gone overboard.  I'd felt really bad about not being able to host anyone.  Now, bring the chorus! I was jonesing for trees, too, and now have too many.  But the house was free and land in Japan is cheap..

Sure, we have tons of room.  I actually have to remind myself to visit parts of the house.. The only downside is we're pretty far from any nightlife.  What time of year were you thinking of?  I think I'd try to avoid July/August.. I haven't been able to go outside in the daytime recently.  (Today is good, though..yay!)

Thanks :-)

When is up in the air at the moment. My new leave starts in April but I may be on a course until June... so likely Sept/Oct.

Guess I won't be leaving the UK anytime soon if I keep planning holidays this far in advance.  ;)

No grass, only weeds..  the backyard is a bit of a shady boggy place, too, so not sure if a lawn is in my future.  Maybe a pond.  And letting the moss take over.

I just wanted to say thanks so much for all the advice, I had the most amazing time, feels very weird to be back (and rubbish!)

I've set up a flickr and am slowly uploading my snaps if anyone's interested! :)

SO SO SO glad you had a great time!!!!  Japan is a very unique experience...I am missing it so much right now...I need sushi!!!  :)  Though I am enjoying my gumbo and boiled crabs!  :)

You all have me missing Japan too!  I haven't thought about it in a year or so -- but now I miss it!  MaryKate, I can't wait to look at the photos; I hope you had the time to spend exploring Kyoto -- amazingly beautiful and peaceful place --- add the Cherry Blossoms and it's a paradise.

Madeira - Glad you made the move well!  Sounds like you're thrilled to be there.  Enjoy.   :)
