now, i really dig the quorn stuff, but i have to limit it to the fake chicken and fake bacon stuff. the burgers i can't do--any veg burgers--it's a texture thing. same with sausages.

the linda mccartney stuff is way too salty.

My husband loves Quorn chicken too and when I found out, it shocked the heck out of me since we're not veggie and he loves meat.
And if you threw a party
Invited everyone you knew
You would see the biggest gift would be from me
And the card attached would say
"Thank you for being a friend!"

chipotle peppers are WAAAAAAY too hot...

Too hot?!!!  Naaaaaah.  Chipotles aren't hot.  We're not talking hot until we get to Scotch bonnets (habaƱeros). >:D

My hubby suggested the Spanish paprika - hee hee, but he should know I'm going to put more kick in it than that. ;)

And my favorite meaty substitute is dried soya mince. We use Sainsbury's own brand

What is the texture like? I used Quorn mince in Spag Bol the other day and hated it - it was too... mushy I guess.

We use crumbled firm tofu for spag bol and it works fine.

I really like the Quorn breaded chicken burgers, I prefer them to real chicken burgers.  I like the sausages ok too but they taste nothing like real sausages.

Another thing you could use is Yam Cake, I think it's called Konnyaku, it's sold at some Oriental food stockists, particularly Japanese ones.  It doesn't taste of anything but it absorbs the flavours of what it's cooked in.  I don't like tofu so I use it instead.

Just to update - I used the chipotle peppers in my pinto beans last weekend, and no meat.  They were just the ticket!  Even the meat-eaters didn't miss the meat.  They made the beans really more-ish with a deep, earthy & almost chocolaty flavor.  Also, because I'd chucked in about 10 whole chipotles & cooked the beans pretty much all day - it was really, really spicy.  So I fished the chipotles out of the beans & then pureed them, using them as the base for sauce on another dish I made.  They did double-duty - those chipotles! ;D

I think mapleleafgirl72 will back me up on how good this turned out! ;)

Definitely second this. Chipotle peppers rock!

"Some products do have lower levels of salt, which prompts the question why some have around the same salt content as Atlantic sea water."

Eeeck! What am I going to eat now?

Eeeck! What am I going to eat now?

I am going to search out a way to make my own!  We eat so many veggie sausages that I simply can't afford to risk all this salt.  I'm overweight and I smoke and I drink...I figure that eating healthily is the only way to stop the old heart from giving way, but if I am unwittingly pumping my body full of salt then I am truly screwed.

OK the packets I have are as follows:

Tesco vege hotdogs - 2 hotdogs contain equivilant to 0.9g salt
Tesco burgers - 0.6g salt (per burger)

NB: the Tesco products are made by Tivall

Morrisons vege sausages - 1.5g per 2 sausages

Making your own is a good idea! I find burgers easier to do than sausages for some reason. It's hard to get the sausagey taste. Must be all the salt!!  :-\\\\

This is one of my favorite veggie blogs, you might get some good ideas from her recipes.  Her lentil burgers are fabulous...maybe some sort of veggie dog out of beans or lentils.
