Erm...can anyone tell me or point me to a thread that details what documents I will need to rent?

for instance, do the references need to be from landlords?

thx~

I needed to have a reference from work, reference from my landlord and then what they did was check my credit and asked for my bank details.  I gave 6 weeks deposit and paid the first month (yes, it was painful).

they can check american credit? probably sounds like a dumb question, but i read on here somewhere that their credit system is very different than ours is, so i guess i didn't think they could check ours - meaning they didn't use the big 3 credit reporting agencies.

No, they didn't check my US credit and I told them I didn't have any UK credit since I had just moved there. That's why I needed a guarantor. Otherwise, I would have had to pay 6 months up front. I don't think I even gave them any references (I was a student at the time). I think I gave them a bank statement to show my student loan was in my account.

I've just rented a house (private landlord, not agency) and I needed to show a financial reference for both me and my partner (for me, my last 2 payslips; for him, a job offer letter since he's just gotten a job but hasn't started yet.)  I also needed a letter of reference from our current landlord (stating we've been good tenants and paid the rent on time.)  No credit check, as far as I know. That was it, I was surprised at how easy it was!

I think the reaosn the documentation is so stricthere is that because it is very difficult to obtain possession if a tenant decideds to be awkward and does not pay up (court proceedings take forever!) so landlords are extremely keen to ensure they have secure income from good tenants.I help lots of US citizens relocate and can recommend using the services of a relocation company that operates in the area you wish to move to. Check out the Relo association (ARLA) for details. If you are moving to central or south wet London or Surrey I can help. Check out www.wimbledonpropertyfinders.com [nofollow] for more details.Paul

Hey Paul - can you help with moving to Hereford? Or do you have any contacts there?
