Cold remedies while preggy
« on: May 04, 2004, 11:54:07 AM »
I have had a horrible cold for the last few days and spent the best part of Thurs, Fri and Sat in bed or curled up on the sofa. Stu went to the chemist to get me something but they told him just about the only safe thing is Vick's inhaler or Vaoprub so I've got the inhaler which has helped a bit. I've also been making myself lots of hot lemon and honey drinks and other vitiamin c rich stuff but now I've got a cough as well.

Sorry to be so whiney I am not looking for sympathy but wonder if anyone can suggest any natural remedies that might work?

Thanks

ps daytime TV really is crap isn't it?!

I don't have any suggestions unfortunately, you're doing exactly what I did! I had a cold early on and got the same advice from my midwife. :(

I had that horrible cold/flu stuff in January when I was about 13 wks.  I am still in the US; but my OB said it was ok to take sudafed, tylenol or regular robitussin.  Unfortunately, nothing really cures a cold - just time.  Try to get extra sleep!

I asked a midwife about sudafed & benadryl etc... I was confused why my SIL in the US could take benadryl but I couldn't, she said they may have a different composition over here, and it may not be exactly the same medicine. It was just a guess, but it made sense to me. Dunno.

Lets face it docs and midwifes over here would say no anyways cuz they dont think it is safe, where in the states they have researched and spent more money on these studies and find it ok.  I see this in a lot of things here.

Well thankfully I seem to be over the worst of it now, feeling loads better today. I had a look at the Sudafed UK website and it said it's probably OK to take in pregnancy but you should check with your own doctor first.

Thanks Rhia, don't worry I am slugging back the grapefruit juice, orange juice, rosehip tea and hot lemon drinks - all seem to be doing the trick finally.
