Work-out clothes
« on: May 12, 2008, 05:13:49 PM »
For the past month, I've been working out almost every day - and definitely plan to continue. My question is for those of you with a similar work-out routine:

How many gym outfits do you have? I ask this because I am truly perplexed about what to do with my sweaty clothes every day. I don't want to have to do a load of laundry every day, but don't want the smelly clothes hanging around, either.

What's a girl to do? I only have 2 gym shirts and 2 pairs of gym pants at the moment. I'll need to invest in more clothes, but how many?

I have four tops and four pairs of bottoms, and I only do the gym every other day. My clothes are drying faster now that the weather has improved. I think JJB Sports has had many price reductions, as shops are closing due to poor sales. You could try there to save money. I never feel like a fashion plate at the gym, but then, I'm kinda slobby anyway.

I do home workouts so I guess it doesn't matter what I wear but I got lots of stuff from Matalan and M&M Sports (online). Cheap!

Thanks! Sorry, I should have said that I'm in the US -- and so I don't need recommendations for stores in the UK.

But what do you do with your smelly clothes in between washes?

Nah! I could have looked at your tag.  ;)

Does your machine have a quick wash function? You could use that. Otherwise, I just put them in the laundry bin.

Oh of course! sorry I didn't even notice the American Flag under your name.
I have four kids so I do a wash everyday so smelly clothes laying around isnt really an issue with me. Most the time Im just in a shorts and a sports bra.

Another suggestion for sweaty clothes if you're not going to wash them right away is to hang them up somewhere with ventilation to air out so at least they are not staying damp.

Also, if you've got the time and the inclination you could wash them out by hand.

That's pretty much what I do as well.
And if you threw a party

I have three pairs of pants, three sports bras, and various tops. I work out 3 times a week. I just let my sweaty clothes hang out in the hamper until I wash them all at the end of the week. But, it's just me here, so I don't have loads going all the time.

I run and lift weights 3 times a week and I get really sweaty! I've accumulated lots of kit over the years, so I'm working from a larger pool: 3 pairs of wicking trousers, 3 sports bras,  5 pairs of (NOT cotton!) running socks, and about ten wicking vests.

My routine is to re-wear the trousers and bra (and my elastic knee brace) for all three workouts, drying them in between, and with the tops, socks, and pants, I dry those alongside the rest of my kit, and then throw them in the laundry bin once they're dry. I always wash the wicking stuff inside-out, and usually at a hot wash, though sometimes I get lazy and just do them at 40 because it's quicker, but that gets rid of the smell just as well.

And then there's the stuff I only wash every few weeks, like my iPod armband, lifting gloves and the HRM strap, but those don't seem to collect the stink as readily as my clothes...

I stocked up on a ton of workout gear when I was last in the States (SO cheap!!) and I really liked the UnderArmor stuff from running shops, and the Champion and Ativa brands from Dick's and Target (I can't remember which brand was from which store). My mom also knows my size and exactly the kind of tops I like so she always keeps an eye out for sales and sends me parcels with her finds, too. :)

I haven't worked out in a long time, but I used to go 3-4 times a week.  This might be gross, but I wore my stuff for about a week (making sure it was dried out in-between washes) and then washed it.  I alternated between 2 sets of shirts/shorts/bras and that was that *shrug*.  Of course, I come from a family that thinks you should wear jeans about 3-4 times before washing, so that could be my upbringing coming through :-D.

I definitely think jeans should be worn at least 3-4 times (if not more) before washing!! I'm just a crusty kid!

I think I usually go for a smell test, if the top stinks, wash it.  If not, I may wear a top twice before washing.  Bras can also be used twice or three times even.  Bottoms I wear a few times before washing.  I just chuck everything in the laundry basket for washing.

3 sets of kit. I go in the gym onsite at work, so Mon-Fri, wash it on Tues evening and weekend....but then the dirty stuff I can just leave in the washer til I'm ready to wash it as I live alone.....so will have to work out another system come September!  ;D
