Organic Products Delivered To Your Door
« on: May 13, 2008, 01:36:16 PM »
Has anyone ever ordered a veggiebox before??

I was contacted by these people today and thought it looked quite good.  They have a location map at the bottom of the website to connect you with other local farmers in the area of which you live in.

www.riverford.co.uk

Just want to ask if what was delievered to you met expectations...was it as fresh as they claimed or tasted better than supermarket organic products?

Wanted some opinions before I order anything. :)

We used to get delivery from their sister company River Nene.  Quality of food is very good and they include recipes with the weekly boxes. We never get organic from supermarkets so can't say how they compared to that.  We switched to a local company that gave us the ability to specify more what went in our box (instead of just as additional items).

I love Riverford and have visited their farm in Devon. It's very impressive and I've not heard much negative about their operation. We got their boxes when we could afford them and were pleased. Bear in mind that late spring/early summer is actually a bit of a boring period. The fruit and veg most people really love is actually late summer/autumn. They supplement with organic produce from Europe. They visit those farms and make sure they are of satisfactory standards.

I'd recommend them.
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

Do they deliver on time as they advertise?

I would love to order from these people but always worry that I will get unripe or the odd manky veggies.  I used to have my own vegtable garden for years but when I moved I unfortunately had to give it up ( current garden not suitable ) and I have to say I miss the taste of "home grown" fruit and veg.

Most supermarkets ship product from abroad so I was keen to know if people could really taste the difference between supermarket and local produce.

I have to say I love their website..the recipes look fab!

Once they were late due to a van breaking down but they let us know.  Never had anything that was "old" but did sometimes get fruit that took a long time to be ripe enough (or maybe I was just impatient, LOL).

There's a long-running thread on where to find organic food/delivery boxes (including Riverford) in this forum - actually, it's the first stickied thread:

I know we've also had a couple of threads on veg boxes specifically over the past year or so, and I know they've mentioned Riverford...aha, here they are!

Hope this helps!  I've thought about doing a veg box several times before but DH and I eat such different veg (he's into greens and peppers and things while I prefer beans and pulses and root veg) that I'm not sure it would work for us.  :-\\\\

Cheers Meg  :) - I think I will get a box an try them out next month and the meat link in your topic is good.  Meat supplies where I am from are dreadful so I am going to give them a try too..

Just need a nice fresh fish man/woman now.  ;)

Good luck with that - you'd think that living in a seaside town would mean excellent fresh fish for us, but we've struggled to find a decent fishmonger!

I absolutely LOVE Abel & Cole, I can't say enough good things about them, I've turned into such a cheerleader for them. We've been getting their Mixed Organic Box for over a year now and I'm just stupidly happy with them. We've had about five friends join up now based on our raving. :)

I have heard details on the working conditions of their employees and that puts me off wanting to use them...Never heard a bad word on their products tho.  ;)

Not sure where you are in Hants, but if you are near Stockbridge give John Robinson butchers a go.  I get almost all of our meat from there and have never been disappointed.

I saw one advertised in local paper and thought about giving it a try. This one you could have a regular weekly delivery or just an ad-hoc one which I thought about.
The way I look at it is that if they send poor quality produce or stuff overripe and going off then they aren't going to be in business long!
