Suggestions on how to move stuff
« on: May 15, 2008, 11:55:46 AM »
I am most likely moving back to NY next month and want to know what you think the best way to move approximately 4 suitcases of stuff back would be. I am most likely flying Continental back which does have an allowance of extra bags but it might be more costly than having a moving company. I'm in Northern Ireland. Any suggestions? I've already thrown away and donated what I could but need what I have left. I really don't have a heck of a lot of money as fares are extortionate. I'm still not sure when or if I'm going but I'm about 85% there in mind.

Thanks

When we moved out we didn't take extra baggage on Continental but we did go to the maximum weight allowance on two pieces. It was cheaper per pound than the stuff we shipped.

Is it stuff you will need right away or can you be without it for a while?

I hope things are all right. PM me if you need a hand with anything, although we're moving next month ourselves.

No real suggestions, but if there are items you won't need right away, and money is tight, you can always leave it with me and I can post it to you once you are sorted.

Thanks you guys. None of it I need right away but the thing is, it's a FULL two suitcases at least and I wouldn't even know how to get it shipped. It would also be a hassle for you Yankee if I left it as you know how things work here. Even if I made arrangements ahead of time somehow the bureacracy of it all would be annoying.

I'm still making up my mind but it seems this is something I should have done a long time ago. I deserve better than this and at 33 and wanting children more than anything a dead end relationship is not good for me. I don't care if citizenship is that close

Haunted... sorry things seem to be not going so well...

all I can say is that most times the extra suitcases are going to be cheaper than shipping the contents via any other method.  Call Continental ans ask how much their excess baggage costs.  You could try http://www.excess-baggage.com/
I think they are the ones with an office in London airports.  Thought that won't help you in NI.

Hugs, Haunted.

If it's just 4 cases but you don't want to do the extra baggage route, try checking out the bulletin boards at the local Uni there (oh, wait, are you in Derry or Belfast?). When I was at Reading Uni, I always saw fliers for companies that shipped stuff and they were geared to the student budgets and amounts. I'm heading out now, but I'll see if I can find any names of companies for you when I get back.
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

She's in Derry, but I work at the uni in Belfast and will keep an eye out.

I second the hugs.

Thanks for all the help and wishes you guys. I'm going to phone Continental later on and see what they say. At least then I'll know where I stand.

It's so hard because there are really good days but overall nothing seems to ever get better. I've been the only wanting this for too long. I know what decision I should make but I love this man so much that I can't get completely into that thought just yet.

I didn't know about that excess baggage site. I'll have a look at that today as well

I really don't know anything about this company but I saw them online and they were quick to respond to an email I sent to them www.sevenseasworldwide.com

Good Luck  :)

Here's another site to look at:

I second the recommendation of just paying for extra baggage when you fly.  I can't remember how much I paid, but it wasn't too much (I think it was $100 per bag, but I'm not sure).

ETA: I hope things work out for the best for you, no matter what decision you make  :-*

Thanks again for the help and wishes everyone. I'm checking those sites out. I still have to call Continental and see what they say. It's hard when you make those kinds of calls it seems very permanent and such and I just don't have that strength just yet. Those sites will keep me busy in the meantime.

No advice, but I know it's a difficult decision to say the least. Take care of yourself and I hope you decide what's right for you.
