New Appointments for NYC Consulate
« on: May 05, 2004, 10:20:45 PM »
Hello Everyone,
It's been a long time since I've written.  I got married this January in Guildford, Eng. (We did this to avoid any waiting for the visa since it takes two weeks to get your marriage cert. in the USA) We are planning a big to-do at the end of May and then I will be heading back to our home.  We will be going to the NYC Consulate on the Tuesday afterwards.  I just found out that they now have set appointments instead of waiting on line.  Here is my question, has anyone gone to the Consulate since this change?  Do you still need to get there at 7am or can you come a little bit before the scheduled appointment?  We are staying at a hotel nearby so it's not a problem to be there early, I just don't want to rush there if I don't need too.  Also, how long does this take?  We will have friends in town from England and will want to spend time with them.  Can I count on this or should we plan on being there all-day or waiting around?

We have Mortgage papers, Letter from his job, Bank statements Marriage cert. and fast track application.  Do I need anything else?  I know I need to get some passport photos of myself as well and will do that.

Thanks so much!  This site has been a life saver!

Stacey

Check out my website for info on the visa interview itself...didn't take too long...a couple of hours in total.

Not sure about when you should show up for the interview as we went in September (before you needed an appt)...but I know others have gone since then and they'll be able to help you out.

Good luck! :D

I was just there a couple of weeks ago to get my UP visa reprinted (since they ripped it when they initially issued it and Immigration at Heathrow was not amused--although thank Goddess they let me through, they also told me to have it re-issued the next time I was in NYC).

You can make appointments up to two weeks in advance.  I made a 9:00 appointment and showed up at about 8:45.  At 8:50 they started calling out the names for 9AM appointments.  They checked each person's passport against the master list before opening the door.  They have 8 or 10 people scheduled in each appointment time slot so you will go up with a bunch of other folks.

Security is a bit tighter now as you are not allowed to take any cell phones inside.  I didn't bring mine, but I think they just hold them downstairs until you come out.

Once inside, it is the same as it's always been...getting in the queue is a bit of a free-for-all and they open at 9 and start taking people.  If you applied on the net make sure to print out your application.  When I was there I was doing my business at the reception desk rather than in the visa queue, and people kept coming up to reception to have their internet applications printed out.  Then they had to get on the queue again.

There is a passport photo machine inside the visa office just in case you forget to get them made.  But I would have mine done in advance anyway.  ;)

If your visa application is straightforward and you are one of the first to get served, the whole thing could be over in as little as 20 minutes including the time it takes to pay (they send you to a separate queue to do that).  You will then be asked to pick up your passport in an hour or two.  I can't imagine that you wouldn't be able to leave and come back later--I did in October when I got my visa--but I would check with them first just to make sure.

I have a different visa than the one you are applying for so I'll let the married people answer your questions about evidence.

THANK YOU!!!  That was a lot of help!  Seeing that you don't have to be there too far in advance is a relief!  I think we are a straight forward except that we did get married in the UK with only a visitor's visa, but hey we had to do it.  My husband could not wait around two weeks for the US marriage cert. to come back.  Also, Paying another $500 for the fiancĂ©e visa seems a little extreme! Especially since I have not been able to work since I went there.  Also I stayed no more then 4 months both times I was there so I didn't go over my 6-month allowance. Oh well, I hope they understand.  The things we do for love!
