help filling out a UK tax return
« on: May 18, 2008, 08:20:23 AM »
Hi,

I'm a U.S. citizen who moved to London in June 2008. The HMRC sent me a tax return to fill out because I worked and lived in the U.S. during part of the '08 tax year.

I am completely confused by the Foreign income I have to report on my UK tax return. Do I report all the U.S. income I earned from April 2007 to April 2008? Or just the amount I received since the day I entered the UK? (I was still receiving US income for a few months after I moved to the UK)

Also, do I just calculate this information from my paystubs (since my US W2 is for the 2007 calendar tax year)?

Would appreciate any info from anyone who has filled out a UK tax return - thanks!

The earnings from your US paid employment go on a separate employment page and you figure these out from your US payslips.

You will of course owe UK tax on this part of your income but you would claim the foreign earned income exclusion against this income on your 2007 return so you won't be paying tax twice.

Purple, I know this topic is four months old, but I have only recently joined this Board, and spotted this topic just a few minutes ago.

Is the form still outstanding?

Also, do you have any investment income from outside the UK? If so, was that income remitted to the UK, or left outside the UK? Roughly how much investment income might we be talking about?
