Where to stay in Paris
« on: May 20, 2008, 03:32:47 PM »
I am trying to book a couple of nights in Paris for DH and I as part of our trip to France (I just want to see the Louvre!!!).  Can anyone recommend good hotels or B&B's that don't cost a fortune?
I am the architect of my destiny.

Sorry Dar, I only have a recommendation on where NOT to stay.  We booked a hostel that looked nice online and turned out it used to be a BROTHEL until a few month earlier.  There were bunk beds and itchy green wool blankets, no hot water and the 'shower' merely a hose with a drain underneath... YUCK.  Still makes my skin crawl thinking about it! Although it was surprisingly central.

Zones 5 & 6 aren't far from the Louvre but sometimes have deals on places to stay.  Are you traveling via Eurostar?  If you are, my friends that go to Paris frequently say you get the best deal if you book a train and hotel package.

My friend and her boyfriend just came back from Paris (sadly no ring  :()...this is what she had to say:

We stayed in the St Germain area which is a fairly posh area with lots of consulates and fancy restaurants, it was away from the mad traffic noises though and still very close to walk to the Seinne.  The hotel was also surrounded by different tube lines which is very handy as your feet get sore after a while!

We booked with Travelocity as we found it to be the cheapest and you could pick your flights.  The only thing I would say is that Paris is renound for small hotel rooms but if you want something Parisian then it's worth the five minutes of tripping over each in the morning.

We stayed at Hotel du Seude St Germain for 3 nights, including our flights (from Edinburgh - easyjet) we paid £579.00 in total, our hotel was a three star but possibly the cleanest hotel room I've ever stayed in. Oh and this didn't include breakfast but it's not really worth paying extra for coffee and a croissant when you can go to a café.

And the only place I've ever stayed (on my one trip to Paris in 2004) is gorgeous but costs a fortune!  (http://www.hotel-bassano.com/)  Sorry I couldn't be of more help. :P

I was going to say the same thing! We went in April and stayed at a hostel that was suppose to be brand new, but sounds very similar to yours! I think it was called Hotel Hostel or something like that. It was the worst hostel I ever stayed at, but it had good reviews.

I second the St Germain are if that hotel is in your price range.  It is definitely quieter and very central.  I have never stayed there, so no hotel recs, but shopping and eating is one of my favorite hobbies.  It has plenty of both.

If you want to splurge on a romantic dinner, the views at sunset from Georges at the top of the Pompidou Centre are awesome and the food is pretty damn good too!

I stayed in the St Germain area last year and was pleased. Of course, I cant remember the name. I find tripadvisor.com to be really helpful with reviews and photos by Joe Average...much more honest than the hotel websites!

Don't forget the Musee D'Orsay and the catacombs!
I refuse to answer that question on the grounds that I don't know the answer.

We stayed here in February:

Can't recommend it enough! Brilliant location right near a Metro station, friendly staff, excellent morning breakfast, and very good value for money. We booked through Expedia, and it was surprisingly cheap! Loved it, and will stay there again when we go back.
Ok, so I'm smug.

We stayed at the K+K and it was really nice and a great location.  I dont know how much it cost because DH surprised me with it but I know we can't afford to spend anywhere near a furtune:-)
It was lovely and the funniest part about it was all the guests were either American or Candian!  I was freaking out because everyone sounded like me!
Good luck!

Citadines are great if you want to save on eating out - they're appartment hotels. The one at Les Halles is walking distance to the Louvre and close to food markets and shops. Great if you are vegetarian.

I've only stayed in hostels in Paris, so I can't be much help.  Although the one we stayed in was a lovely historic building.  It's fine if you don't mind bunk beds!   ;)

When my mum and I went to paris, we stayed at the Best Western Opera Saint Lazare.  It's basically just a normal hotel and not too expensive.  We liked it well enough and getting around Paris wasn't a problem as there are 2 metro stations within walking distance.
