washer/dryer combo, any recommendations?
« on: May 20, 2008, 06:28:00 PM »
Dh said he's tired of hearing me complain about the length of time it takes to dry clothes here, so he wants to get a washer/dryer combo. We truly do not have enough space for separate machines in the house we will be in, its an extremely small 2 bed house (well, to me it's extremely small, small living room with no separate area for dining, a kitchen that fits about 3 cupboards, and no, I am not joking, it has a mini fridge and oven :( ) no room in the hallway, no mains in the closet etc...trust me I've tried many, many ways to finagle the space, but it will be difficult enough as this house is really only meant for a childless couple at a stretch and we will have 2 kids in it.

Anyway, I've been looking at a hotpoint or a candy. I've read that the hotpoint we were looking at (the wd640) is getting bad reviews for drying time. I've heard others have been pretty happy with their Candy machines, just wondering if anyone has any experience with either of these brands, or has another one they could recommend? We're looking to spend about £300, I know that's probably not a lot but money isn't exactly easy to come by.

I think I will mostly use this as backup, ie I need something washed/dried faster than the usual wash/line dry will provide, or if it's raining etc (if last summer was anything to go by, that will be every day heh).

I realize a condenser dryer will never dry things as quickly as a vented dryer, so I know it will take awhile...but I managed to get used to washing taking forever here as well. I'd just like to buy something that isn't going to break down constantly, or be difficult to use.

I have a Candy model CMD146, and it works great!
I use it daily and have no complaints.

I have the CMD146 too and have had the repair man in three times, with two logic boards replaced.  Not a huge fan, I'm afraid.

I have a Hotpoint 440D, its OK, only complaint is the amount of time it takes to dry anything, about 2 hours, don't know how normal that is for the washer/dryers..  The main thing I looked for were good reviews and the weight that you coud dry compared to the weight you could wash.

I had a combo washer/dryer in my first flat here in scotland when i was up in aberdeen.
I'd never ever get a combo again as it took forever to dry clothes.. I've had a condensor dryer ever since i love mine.. But i understand your problem of space. Sorry i don't have any reccomendations..

I have a Servis M9813W and it works great. Much better than the combo I had in Brooklyn a few years back.

So far we've had one problem, where it had an imbalanced load and the belt got dislocated. It took a bit to get a repair guy out (which was mainly to do with who the local repair guy was... we knew him from one of the pubs), but it was still well under warranty. We had one other minor problem, but it was our fault and it didn't need repair (something got lodged in the drum and made all the clothes smell like heated penny).

The wash cycle is good and has lots of options. The dry cycle can be done pretty quickly if it's a small load. If it's full of jeans or towels, I sometimes have to put it on for a second go.

We got ours at Argos and it was delivered pretty quickly. It was fairly inexpensive, too.

All in all, I'd recommend it.
Another shameless promotion for www.mclevey.com, the best place on the internet to buy art.
