Do you think so? It seems like the mainstream stations (in the UK) hardly play any unknowns to me.

I guess it just feels that way to me. I used to listen to KCRW a lot in the US and it seemed like the only radio station that played anything new and interesting... as I'm writing this, I'm thinking about the radio that I listen to here. I mostly listen to BBC1 but I guess it wouldn't be considered a mainstream station. Hmmm?

As for country music, I'm not really a fan of most of it except for Johnny Cash (OF COURSE!!!) but I don't mind a bit of bluegrass. We used to go to a bluegrass night at our local in Islington.

I love Bluegrass!

I share pkmac's sentiment, I would kill to get something that even begins to play a format anything similar to BBC Radio 1 in the states...I haven't listen to US FM Radio in years.

I must not be down with the kids then because I don't like Radio 1 these days.  ;D

I find most music I like via the internet these days.

I was disappointed not to find a 24/7 Christmas music station when we went there for Christmas.

Here in the US, the only country music that's popular up here in MA is the crossover country. I like most of it and I love bluegrass! It reminds me of where I lived in TN! In TN most of the stations were country and in Virginia there were less and less pop stations and more country. You can actually feel the changeover. Here, it's mostly alternative and hip hop that's popular.

I desperately miss my local rock station (WIYY Baltimore).  I've never found a suitable rock station here.  :(

It all depends on the circles that you run in, music popularity is subjective.

I agree.  When I was a teenager in the 80s, I was well into the whole Brit music scene.  But living where I did, stuff was hard to get and none of it except the real "mainstream" stuff got radio play.

In the late 90s, a radio station started up playing the "hits" of the 80s - and they were playing groups/songs that NEVER got airplay in that town in the 80s!  Stuff I had to pay top whack for to get imported records.

There are different kinds of country.  I hate the 'new' stuff - Shania Twain, keith Urban etc.  But I play Johnny Cash all the time, and I can dig a bit of Dolly Parton.

Boy named Sue is really not his best work.  I recommend the Live at Folsome Prison album.  The duet of 'Jackson' with June Carter is just brilliant.

Is that also the song on "Walk The Line?" ahhh..I love that film  ;)  And your right about the odd bit of Dolly..I like a bit of 9-5 and Jolene and that karaoke classic Islands In The Stream!. Can't beat Dolly Parton for a drunken sing song  :D

As for Shaina Twain...Urrgghh!! Its as bad as hearing fingernails scrape down a blackboard! [smiley=dizzy2.gif]

I have to say the majority of music I like is acoustic (inner hippy) and 80s cheese.  ;D

I lurve Tracy Chapman and I am also a fan of Nizlopi's new stuff.

Wow - mellow man  [smiley=bandana.gif]
