Well each course is different. I think they are great if you can discipline yourself enough to do them and not get distracted at home.  My ex re-trained himself from a Production Manager to a Software and Programmer Developer through Open University...but it was really hard work...but it gave him a good step in the door to a career which progressed him further.

I think any home learning course is good..as long as you have the time and discipline to do them.

Usually you do get a area Tutor to contact via email or phone if you get stuck on anything  :)

Me myself would be a useless home motivator...I work best in a lecture environment.  I would be to tempted to switch the telly on at home  ;)

I do Open University courses as part of my social work post registration traning and learning.

Generally, I have found it to be a good experience, though demanding, and so far, all my tutors, bar one, has been excellent. I really recommend attending tutorials. They also are very supportive of / for disabled students.

However, I think that I would not use the Open University for language learning, as I would find that too difficult and need the input of hearing the language and interacting with others.

PM me if you'd like to discuss it further!  ;D

A friend is doing a masters in philosophy through OU (while working full-time in London) and has had no complaints...
