All going wrong...visa when unemployed?
« on: June 02, 2008, 11:22:45 AM »
I have just been informed that my contract will not be renewed past July 31st this year, and I am getting married on September 27th in the US - we will be applying for a spouse visa for my wife in the US, and returing once received.

Although I shouldn't have too much of a problem finding work *touch wood*, I may find it hard for an employer to take me on in August/September, knowing that I will be needing 4 weeks off at the end of September - October.

*IF* I have not managed to find work before I marry for these reasons, am I, to put it bluntly, totally screwed?

 :(

There is no yes or no answer to this...it depends on everything else.

So even *if* I am unemployed, there still may be hope that they will issue a visa if other evidence stacks up - savings, how employable I am, (I am a home owner)...etc...?

Thanks, I feel a little less sick than I did five minutes ago...although I'm not liking the weakness of 'possibly'...'probably' would have given a little more false hope. :)

You know I can't give more assurances without knowing the details.  It will make it harder, but there is no way of knowing how much harder without having all the details.

Even if you can't find solid, permanent work (have you looked contract employment?), you could try temporary/agency work until you come back from the US.  It's not ideal, but it'll keep your finances healthy & show your determination at maintaining employability.  I don't know what profession you're in, so it's kinda hard to say.

Not sure how I am going to play this one yet.
I currently earn ok money, have security clearance, and am contracted to the MoD via a third party, so I hope at least I can be looked at as being trustworthy!

Argh, if my contract had ended in August it would have been ok...but no!

Like everyone has said it depends on the case, but just want to let you know my spousal visa was approved in July 2006, and my husband started temp work (after being unemployed for awhile before then) in June 2006. We also lived with his parents at the time so they had to co-sponsor us...you may have to look into co-sponsoring if it comes to it (I'm assuming co-sponsors are still allowed on spousal visas?) So there is hope :)

Oh and I feel your pain, my contract ended at the end of April and now I'm scared my indefinite leave to remain may not be approved in July...good luck!

No, co-sponsoring is not allowed any more.

Good to know. Anyway, it shouldn't effect the OP either way really.
