Tess of the D' Urdervilles..   :\\\'( :\\\'( :\\\'(

Oh no I'd forgotten Tess was on tonight! Missed it this week!

I'm in a rut of turning on Paramount Comedy and watching endless reruns of "Frazier." I guess it's like comfort food. I must have seen every episode five times over both in the US and now over here. I guess I'm clinging to some continuity. It is funny stuff though, I've always liked the writing.

I watched Jamie's Ministry of Food, which both irritated and brought out my sympathies. He went to the obese capital of England, Rotherham to teach 8 people to cook. I wish the programme hadnt focused so much on the 22 year old benefits mother...who had takeaway 7 nights a week but complained of being poor... But had the most amazing cooker i've ever seen which she never touched. Along with a huge telly and SKY box. She just "didnt have the time" to cook. :-X   I wish they'd shown more of the 84 year old trying to cook for the first time, or the others who were sticking to the committment. But I expect the show wants sa "journey".

Think Jamie bit off more than he could chew with trying to change Rotherham into a cooking town. But he's certainly right that the attitude has to change at home, if it's to work anywhere else.

I watched that too (followed by Free Lover but we won't talk about that  ;)).  I like Jamie but it was kind of bugging me at times because I felt he was being subtly condescending to some of those people at times, and I don't think that will help him.  Perhaps he couldn't help himself, but still...

I thought he showed great restraint when sat on the floor with that mum eating crap out of the containers... cheese and chips? (Never even heard of that...)  And he was very sympathetic to the woman at the end, though she rejected him soundly. I really hope he can turn her around, though he's got his work cut out for him as she's clearly in the "poor me" state of mind.. But again, it's attitude. Like he said, he's not spending 3 months trying to teach only 8 people how to cook. Gotta be passed on. I just wish I knew someone who didnt cook that I could have a go at teaching.

Actually, at Outback Steakhouse in the US, you can order an 'appetizer' that is a big PLATTER size portion of fries smothered with cheese & I can't remember what all else - chopped green onions, I think, and some other stuff.  So I wasn't really surprised when I saw cheese & chips on offer here.  ;)

I watched the Jamie show too and even though I find him self-righteous and patronizing, I think what the show addresses is really important and he is the only one talking about it. There are signs of malnutrition in this country and what he is trying to do will hopefully make people take notice of the problem.

I'm curious about the Free Lover show??

Yes, I agree with all of this.  :)

Heeee...http://www.channel4.com/health/microsites/D/dawn-porter/free-lover.html  (might be a way to watch it online somehow?)

I missed the very beginning, but I didn't miss the end when she was in Zegg (formerly in East Germany)...  ;)  Steve didn't watch, but he enjoyed it all the same.  [smiley=lipsrsealed2.gif]

Cheese (curds) and chips and gravy = poutine.  Which, being a French word, makes it haute cuisine.  And Canadian, too!  Back away, Jamie Oliver, yer messing with culcher here.

I've been watching Reaper, really great show.  I didn't think much of the premise, but the characters are all good.

And that Holly Hunter show.. Saving Grace.  Does she usually talk like she has a sock in her mouth, or is that some particular accent.. or what?

They had poutine at Burger King last time I was there.

It wasn't too bad really.
