McDonald's "Great Tastes of America" month
« on: June 04, 2008, 04:40:44 PM »
Was desperate when stuck in Inverness town centre on Monday and noticed that McDonald's is running their annual "Great Tastes of America" promotion - basically a different themed burger each week in June.

So (always curious as to what UK marketing people think American "tastes" really are  :P) I decided to do a mini Morgan Spurlock and I'm going to try each one of these burgers, one a week. (I know it's tough but someone's got to do it).

So first up was what McDonalds call the "Miami Melt": (100% beef patty, streaky bacon, cheese made with Monterey Jack, crisp lettuce, onion and cheese sauce all in a chilli and chive topped sesame bun).

First impression: Nothing particularly "Miami" about the ingredients, but then again I'm from SoCal so what the hell do I know?

My Miami Melt rating: 8 out of 10 stars. All in all this was just a damn good burger. The combination of the cheese and onion sauce, the Monterey Jack and bacon made a nice gooey mess and it was quite yummy!

Anyone else have a Miami Melt? Give your ratings!

Next up: The New York Supreme (June 4-10), the California Classic (June 11-17) and Arizona Grande (June 18-24).
It sure ain't cricket!

That Miami one does sound like a good burger (say it like you're Jules Winnfield!)... but i agree that i dont see what's so 'Miami' about that.  :-\\\\

I think I saw an advert where they said the NY burger contains mayonnaise. Hello?

I'm so glad you are doing this!  I see these ads every day, and always think "if I wasn't a veggie and didn't boycott McDonal's, I'd so be trying these"  ;D

I expected the Miami burger to have pineapple in it...but what do I know, I'm English!

I shall be watching this thread with interest....

I would expect the Miami burger to be more like a Cuban sandwich - not sure what 'streaky bacon, cheese made with Monterey Jack, crisp lettuce, onion and cheese sauce all in a chilli and chive topped sesame bun' have to do with Miami either?

 ???

Cuban sandwich:

Or maybe like the:  Frita Cubana a Cuban style hamburger, made with ground beef and chorizo, fried onions, a tomato based sauce and topped with very fine julienne fries, all inside the bun.

I shall be interested to read about the other offerings in this promotion, highlandhalo!

My thoughts exactly Mrs R
Or something picadillo like with green olives with pimentoes, tomatoey sauce-lime- or like vaca fritta with the sliced onions... or something with chimichurri since Miami is very multicultural (says the girl who lived in Miami for 6 years)

I'm interested to see what they think makes a burger Californian.  My bet is on either avocado/guac or sprouts.  Oh!  Monterey Jack!

What a cool thread!!  There is a McDonalds located right at the bottom of our block of flats (literally 1 minute away from where I live) so I keep in touch with their changing offerings regularly and recognised their Great Tastes of America as back again this year (my husband tried all of the different burgers last year and regaled me on his views of each).

In the same vein as this thread (rather at the same time), they announced their new McFlurry flavour - Oreo cookies blended with a toffee sauce!!!  I am planning to treat myself to one for my birthday next week!

Viva McDonalds! (especially their McFlurries and their lattes, the latter being my usual morning "breakfast").

The New York Supreme
4th – 10th June
100% beef patty, streaky bacon, cheese, tomato, Batavia lettuce and cool mayo all in a split top sesame bun.

I don't know what this has to do with New York?

I guess I would expect a New York burger to have relish and pickles.
