What to do with streaky pork?
« on: June 05, 2008, 11:50:17 AM »
I got some streaky pork at a farm shop yesterday, for my husband but we don't really know how best to cook it. My hubs found a couple of complicated recipes online, but want something simpler, but other than plain old grilling or frying it, we haven't come up with anything. Any ideas?

Cheers!

Cut it up into small cubes, cook it with some beans, onions and a touch of molasses and serve with cornbread and greens. Mmm! :)

If its pork belly, slow roast it in the oven for like 2 hours. Delish.

Thanks everyone for the ideas.

It is belly but it's pre cut into 4 chunky strips so not sure if that is worth roasting, otherwise that would have been good.

I searched around a bit more online and found a recipe that says you can crisp fry it, then caramelise slices of cooking apple in the pork fat, so I think that's how I'll do two of the slices. The other two I'll freeze and dig out next time hubs wants beans with pork, like Caligurl suggested.

Sorry for the late suggestion, but you could also do split pea soup with it.   Although the apple and pork sounds way yummier!  :)
I refuse to answer that question on the grounds that I don't know the answer.

Oh he is a big pea soup fan! So maybe I'll do that with the leftover slices. I presume you would cook if before adding it to the soup, or do you cook it in the soup if you see what I mean?

Put it in the slow cooker with Chinese 5-spice seasoning.

Oh, I buy those from time to time, I marinate them in BBQ sauce and throw them on the BBQ. Yummy.

Got a delicious recipe for Crispy pork with chilli in Ken Hom's Thai cooking book.

Uses belly pork cut into cubes. You deep fry it to crisp it up, and then  make a sauce with garlic, ginger, shallots, tomatoes, fresh coriander, fish sauce, stock and lots of chopped chillis and then simmer the pork in it for 20 mins.....one of the best things I've ever cooked.

I think you'd fry it up with a few other things like onion, celery, etc, then use that as a base for the broth and soup it up from there.
