The NHS is funded by general taxation and NI.

NI is general taxation. The revenues from NI are added to the pot along with the rest of general taxation. However, since NI is obtained from people in employment, it is a useful way of establishing entitlement to contributory benefits and pensions. The point I was hoping to make was that the NHS is not just funded out of peoples "paychecks", but also by the people who smoke, drink, drive, buy, sell or import stuff, in fact who do any kind of business.

Okay, I'll clarify which "free" I meant.  We did not have to pay for the OT to come to our house.  We did not have to pay to have the rails fitted to our house.

Yes, we work and make contributions through tax which is obvious because I live here and work here.  But in America, I would have had to pay about $300 per hour for an OT to come to the house and they would have made recommendations but nobody would have been contacted on our behalf. It would have all been up to me to do and on my dime out of my bank account.

So this service, making me not to have to write a cheque to a person who showed up at my house, that is free.  I don't look at my taxes paying them as part of the equation.

I'm thrilled that this level of service is available.
