How old were you when you first tried to read a classic novel on your own (not for school)?
I was 16 - I was just starting Sixth Form and decided I wanted to become more 'worldly', so I read Pride and Prejudice (I'd been given the book for Christmas when I was 12... due to the fact that I was a fan of the Colin Firth BBC series
- but had never read it).
It took me 6 months to get through it (and to this day, I still can't make much sense of it, although I know the story from the TV adaptation)... I'm a big reader, so taking 6 months to read a book is pretty much unheard of for me - usually I'll read a whole book in 1-2 days
.
When I started university, I decided to try to read more classics - I got through Jane Eyre (can't remember much about that one either) and about 2/3 of Wuthering Heights before I got bored and gave up... and moved on to Harry Potter
.
How old were you when you became interested in what was going on in the world (i.e. started reading the paper, watching the news)?
