The Little Things
« on: June 18, 2008, 06:12:20 PM »
DH is in London, living in a furnished apartment.  I join him permanently in a few months.  He asks me to bring things he needs/doesn't have when I come over.  Things like a shower pole, clothes pins (for his crisps!), Tupperware, and plastic storage baggies of all sizes.  He works long hours, six days a week (until I get there and remedy that) so he is too tired to shop (or really doesn't want to).   ;D
Can little things like his requests be a bit of a challenge to purchase/find there?  Or is really not wanting to shop for them?  TIA!

He just doesn't want to shop for them - not that I blame him. They are all readily available in London and aren't difficult to find.

Sounds to me like he's just not wanting to shop for them, since everything you've mentioned is readily available pretty much in any supermarket/hardware/homeware store.

Surely though, it would be much easier transport-wise for him to pop down the road/into town to buy the things rather than for you to carry them halfway around the world! Or perhaps you could just buy them in the UK after you've arrived instead of bringing them from the US (unless they are exceptionally cheaper in the US).

I agree with the others.  If I can find them in Glasgow, I'm sure he can find them in London.

Tell him to order online and he won't even need to go to a shop.

Absolutely! Most of those things can be found at Lakeland.

Okay! He can order them off tesco direct and even pick the delivery time (they deliver until like 11 pm and on Sundays) ! He's just a lazy bugger who doesn't want to shop because those aren't anything abnormal!!!  :)

I'll give it a shot.

Your poor DH.  He must be way too busy and tired to shop for these little items.  Get him whatever he needs no questions asked.

It is still easier for one of you to get these things in the UK then to bring them all the way from America.

Erm, how did he manage to survive without you in the first place?

Yep, easily available just about anywhere in London!  I wouldn't bring them with you. If you aren't familiar with stores, when you get here people can direct you in the right place. I wouldn't bring them with you!

a shower pole,
clothes pins (for his crisps!),
Tupperware,
plastic storage baggies of all sizes.

The shower pole would be too awkward for you to bring over. He should be able to get it from any number of hardware stores (B&Q or Homebase should be near him?).

The crisp bag holders are easy enough got at Target and cheaper so you may as well get them for him, it's probably not much of a bother for you to pick them up and they don't take up any room.

Tupperware type containers you can get here but I'll tell you what are like gold for some American ex-pats - the Glad or Rubbermaid "disposable" containers. I've had mine going on 3 years now and they are great. Lightweight and just the right size for everything. You can pack your socks and underwear in them to save room in your luggage. You can't bring too many over.

Plastic baggies you can also get here however the ranges of choices of types of bags are greater in the states. As it is a little thing there's no harm in you stuffing a few boxes in your luggage.

All of these things are much cheaper in the states so if you can bring them, why not. It's a nice thing to do for him and you don't have to go too out of your way for them, nor will they take up much space or cost you much.

But the shower pole would be a bit more trouble to pack.

I have to agree with Stella Marie I have found baggies here in the UK but I prefer the Hefty Zip baggies myself, I even wash out my baggies an reuse them I like them that much.  ;D  [smiley=2thumbsup.gif]  Dh used to laugh at me but not anymore when I explained my logic to him. the way I think of it is I'm saving money cause I'm not having my family send me more baggies when I run out.

I also have a few Tupperware items that I brought with me that are still going strong.

You can get those Glad disposible tupperware type containers at Asda, I got some great ones a few weeks ago for £1.72 for (I think) 6 of them.

It might be worth bringing actual Tupperware brand stuff because that is not easily available here and is pretty expensive.  Ditto Ziploc bags (I mean the ones with an actual zipper) if you use those a lot.
