Frankfurt
« on: June 22, 2008, 10:43:31 AM »
Hi,
I'm going to Frankfurt Airport for a 2 day meeting next Monday and Tuesday (30th and 1st) -Literally staying right at the airport Sheraton Hotel for the whole meeting.  However, I'd like to get there early Sunday morning and actually head into the city to see a bit of it.  Does anyone know my public transport options from getting from Frankfurt Airport into the city itself and then back later in the day? And any idea of what I should see in a quick jaunt around the city? Is it even worth it? I'm going to research a bit, just thought I'd check with all the knowledgeable folks here first.
Cheers!

I lived there for 5 years.  For a Sunday morning, you'd go to Romerplatz, take a few pics, then cross the footbridge over to Sachenhausen, take a few pics, and that's it and all about it.

It's a great place to live tho'...

phatbeetle -- there's an S-bahn train that runs from the airport direct to the main train station in Frankfurt so it's easy access if you decide to go a day earlier.

I've been to Frankfurt once briefly, and don't know the city well but if you're looking for a nice day out you can try Mainz, which is also accesible by S-Bahn from the airport (I believe it's the same line, the S8, as into Frankfurt but in the opposite direction.)

Mainz is a small city on the Rhine with a mix of old and new, and a reasonable intact medieval quarter. It's also home to the Gutenberg Museum, i.e., Gutenberg Bible, and focuses on printing and the history of printing.

The city centre is pedestrianised, full of shops and is quite lively at least when I visted last at Christmas. It's not super pretty but I thought it had a nice atmosphere and charm.

Absolutely worth while!  It's just that your schedule is constrained to a single Sunday morning.

I'm heading to Frankfurt in a couple of weeks for some R&R.  The 4th of July fireworks on the Rhein, riverside concerts, wine festivals, classic German cuisine, vineyard touring on delux stagecoach,  all booked and paid for.

Take some pics to share too.  Especially Sachsenhausen.

Etymology buffs note:  Sachsenhausen = Saxon + Houses = Saxon territory = the original home of our collateral ancestors who invaded England in the 5th century.
