I taught Nigel Slater about epazote!!
« on: June 22, 2008, 10:04:11 PM »
I was looking at an Observer mag the other day, it was a few weeks old but I hadn't read it all yet. Anyway in Nigel Slater's "Ask Nigel" column, someone had asked about how to reduce the gaseous effect of beans. I forget what he said but he didn't mention epazote so I went on the Observer website & sent him an email suggesting it, and got this reply:

Dear Liz

thank you so much for your email. I didn’t know about this, I will pass it on to the reader.

With kind regards
Nigel

Can it be true, I taught a famous food writer about epazote?!

I keep hoping my immensely talented wife, whose cooking skills are near Goddess-like will open up a chain of Mexican eateries somewhere in the UK. I hope, and I wait ...

Britwife's green salsa verde is to die for, and I've had the real thing down in Mexico and hers is better. She should bottle it.

But will she? Probably not. Sigh ...

Where can you find epazote here?  I've heard it's easy to grow, but I never could find it, even when I lived in New Mexico.

You can buy epazote online from The Cool Chile Company http://www.coolchile.co.uk or buy it in some of the shops in the better cities that stock their stuff.

They also include a packet of epazote, along with the other chiles and stuff you need to make really killer black beans frijoles de la olla.
