So I'm filling out the form 2029 (Application for consular report of birth abroad), and we have our appt on Friday. Just a question if anyone knows about how detailed to get with the Physical presence in the US question. I'm US citizen and DH is UK, and I lived there my entire life until 5 years ago. DH lived there for 9 years. Yet we travelled back and forth to the UK for holidays at least once a year. Do I really have to report every date we left and came back, or do I just report the years that the US was our permanent residence.

Also we never received any email confirming our appt or inviting us to send documents. Is that anything to be concerned about? I did print out my confirmation number and appt time at the time of booking so we have that.

It's our turn to do the birth/passport thingy. I have a couple of questions, I'm sorry if they have been answered before (I did read the 12 pages, but may have missed them.)

1) We need to get Nye's UK passport as well, but only have 1 copy of his long form birth certificate, do they keep it or do we get all documents (including my passport) back on the day of the appointment?

2) Where exactly is the embassy?  The post code shows as one place on google maps, but the actual street address is another. Then I saw another street address on the email that was pasted a couple of pages ago.  Help!

Thanks!

1- They will take copies of the documents that you present to them and should give you the originals back the same day. FYI it only takes a week to get the US Passport once you attend the appointment & you can get in & out faster (from the Embassy) if you send photocopies of the information ahead of time. The UK Passport only takes about 10 days if you use the Check & Send service.

2 - The physical location of the Embassy is different from the Mailing Address. This page has the physical location & how to get there: http://london.usembassy.gov/ukembmap.html

Is there a link somewhere that explains how we can send copies in advance?  I wasn't aware of the option when I took DD two years ago and spent hours with her in the Embassy--something I don't care to do again if I don't have to.  Is it copies I send and then I bring the originals with me?  Or am I mailing the originals?  Where do we send them to?

Also, does anyone know when they open up dates?  I have a cousin coming to London the week of Jan 10th.  I want to go to London that same week so I can see him, and can't afford more than one trip.  I've been checking back for several weeks and the available dates at the Embassy go until the 7th and stop.  I was hoping that after a new week, more dates in the following week would open up, but it's still showing them only going until the Friday before.  I really need to make arrangements for where I'm going to be staying and how I'll travel, and this website isn't helping any.

I received a confirmation email once I made my appointment that instructed me to send the copies & where to send them.

You can try phoning the Embassy to try to get an appointment for the day you want other than checking the appointments page periodically as I'm not sure when they release new appointments.

Unfortuantely the Embassy is not accepting appointments from the 4th through the 18th of January due to a system upgrade:
Quote
Alterations to CRBA Services

Embassy London , Consulate Edinburgh and Consulate General Belfast will not accept appointments for CRBA services between January 3rd and 18th.  The Embassy and Consulates are upgrading the printing of the document, and our services will be off line during this time.

Thanks Weby!  I don't know if I'll be able to go see my cousin now.  That's so disappointing!

the embassy actually cancelled any  appointments that had already been booked for those 2 weeks (mine was on the 5th) they are no longer doing the reports at the embassy, but sending them to the states to be done.

So, I'm in the process of setting all this up so I can get the girls passport and I have a question about the SS card application. It says that the parents names have to match the names on file with the SS Administration. I have to hold my hand up and say that I've yet to get my SS card changed to my married name. I know it's bad, it's been 9 years.

So the question is this: do I have to apply for the girls SS card yet? Can I be lazy and do it later?

was going to say they needed for passport but then I remembered it said to fill in that bit all zeros so not sure.  Could you make an appointment for you at same time to change it?

I just got my youngest two their US passports last year (they were 9/10 years old), we did NOT do the Social Security card application. I told them at the interview we'd do it later, it didn't seem to be a problem. I didn't apply for those because of something it said on the website about their ages which I thought was an issue but apparently I misunderstood or it was wrong.

Excellent, thanks hon.

I don't know. To be honest it's more stress than I need right now. I'm just focusing on their passports so I can get a trip to the US booked for Christmas. :)

Let me step in, because I was in the exact same boat.  There is not a problem with getting the social security card.  I didn't think I'd be able to do it either because I hadn't changed mine yet, but I had no problem at all with it for DD1.  I don't know what that statement is referring to now, but I was reading too much into it.

One nice piece of information is that you can actually just take care of your own SS# while you're there too.  I think I printed out the application to change my name on my SS card, but I don't think I needed to.  I asked about it when I got up to the window, and they just had me go to a different window on the side of the room when I was done with DD's stuff.  It was easy as can be and now I have all of our passports and SS#s up to date.  Don't skip it, just take your marriage certificate, take care of it the same day and save yourself a trip.

Cheers. I'll bring it along.  The girls British Passports just came today so I'm trying to arrange somewhere to stay and then I'll get our appt booked. I'm really quite excited to finally have their passports in hand.
