I have never seen them and I wish I had.  I think broad beans taste faintly of sick.

Broad beans are DIVINE!!! I'm having some for supper! I'm so happy it's broad bean season at long last!! I wait all year for it!

Are lima beans like butter beans? Not that I know whether or not you can get butter beans in the UK, but it's possible they have another name here. I'm not a fan, so I don't actually know.

Re: broad beans vs. lima beans:

According to the link, fava and broad beans are the same thing, and they are different from lima beans.  Here are their scientific names:

Phaseolus limensis (lima beans)
Vicia faba (fava bean)

Whew, thought my taste buds had gone awry.  If they had turned out to be the same thing, I would have chalked it up to the fact I used to eat lima beans out of the can (when my mother forced them on us as kids!) whereas when I eat broad beans in the UK they are always fresh or frozen.

For example, consider the difference between canned and fresh asparagus - no comparison really!  My mother also used to served canned asparagus growing up - yuck!!! But I love it when it's fresh and steamed so it's not overcooked!

I bought a huge bag of frozen broad beans and I was all excited.  Then I tasted them and there is some sort of after taste to me.

My husband thinks I am insane, but I love almost every other veggie.

According to the link I posted, and another web page I found but didn't reference, butter beans and lima beans are the same thing (though I would think they are variations of the same type of bean).  I like the yellow butter beans you find in cans in the UK, unlike the horrible green lima beans in the US.  I even make butter bean mash (just make it like potato mash with the milk or cream plus butter, salt and pepper) which is divine with lamb dishes!

Get thee to a farm shop and buy some fresh ones! They're lovely!

Me gusta las habas! :)

I LOVE lima beans but they have to be baby lima beans. Just like peas have to be petit pois. I'm not sure about lima and butter beans being the same... well, they aren't in my book!
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon
