Air Travel within the UK using US Driver's Licence
« on: June 26, 2008, 10:09:59 AM »
Does anyone know if I will encounter problems at either the BA check in desk or security using a US driver's licence as my form of valid ID?

Background:  I applied for a UK provisional licence online and now have to surrender my US passport within 21 days to the DVLA.  I have a stupid client in Edinburgh who keeps pushing back a visit and thus encroaching into the 21 days.  I have a valid US driver's license and I know that a passport isn't necessary for travel within the UK, but I am not sure if security and the check in desks will accept US Driver's licences as the required form of ID.

Thanks!

As far as I'm aware there is no statutory requirement to show ID for domestic air travel, the requirement comes from the airlines as a "revenue protection" measure, i.e. to stop you re-selling the ticket.

This means the ID requirements are entirely what the airline wants, in this case BA.

I found this on their site:

We do not require to see a passport or photo identification if you are travelling on purely UK domestic flights* (i.e. with no onwards international flights).
If you are travelling on an e-ticket, you will need to have the credit/debit card originally used to pay for the booking.  This is for identification purposes only and you will not be charged again.

Being a belt-and-braces kind of guy I'd take some ID anyway (or phone to check at least.)

That's the problem...I can't really remember if I have shown ID or not.  I always have my passport with me.  I think I have definitely checked in at a kiosk and not shown anything.  But I can't remember what happens right before you head through security.  At heathrow there is a separate terminal/gates for domestic flights, so myabe they don't check.  But at Edinburgh I think it's one terminal.  I should have paid attention the other 7 times I have flown up there.   ::)

I know people that have travelled without ID but I've never done it myself so I can't be that helpful I'm afraid.  If I remember the security people check boarding cards so maybe that's how they know you don't need ID?

I think it's definitely worth a call to BA (and maybe the airports) to make sure.

I've flown Heathrow - Edinburgh or Birmingham - Edinburgh loads in the past 6-months and every time (and on every airline) I've had to show photo ID, not only at check-in, but also at the gate when boarding.

Might be a good idea to phone BA to make sure they'll accept your US driver's licence as ID (I can't see why they wouldn't, since it is a valid photo ID - but just to be safe...)
Not MrsRichUK anymore!  :-)

These days I notice they only check id just before you board the plane.

I'd check with the airline but you may have to consider taking the train up instead if a valid US license isn't good enough.

btw, congrats on the wedding! I've been meaning to ask how it went.  :) I hope N CA was good to you both.

Thanks Olive...will PM you to catch up!

Thanks for the advice everyone.  I called BA and the woman said it should be fine in both check in, boarding and security.
