american weight watchers in london?
« on: June 26, 2008, 11:14:36 PM »
Is anyone out there doing the US version of the WW program? When I moved here I tried the UK version but it just didn't work for me-- maybe its a cultural thing! Anyway, I tried going to the UK meetings but they were just terrible. I tried 3 different meetings but all were disorganised, with no real topic. At one the leader even recommended going on a shake diet! I've tried online but I really miss my meetings. If anyone in london is feeling the same way I'd love to start a weekly "meeting."

Sorry that you're not finding the UK WW to be helpful! I'm not sure if you'll be able to find American WW meetings in London? Maybe someone will know more though.

Can I be bad and suggest Slimming World? (www.slimmingworld.co.uk). I go to their weekly meetings and they're really good. I know it's a different weight loss plan but I definitely feel supported when I go every week. My consultant regularly emails me to check up on how things are going  and encourages me. Just a thought.

I'm sorry you haven't had luck with WW meetings here! I go to them every week, and they're great! Very structured, good topics, etc. I'm not in London, though, so can't help you out. Have you tried checking out the chat forum thingie on the WW website? I think it's a pretty active forum and you might be able to find some fellow Americans there who live near you.

I've gone to meetings here and found them to be similar to the ones back in the US. I'm up north though. It sounds like you've just had bad luck. The program here seems the same to me with the exception of the point calculations not taking fiber into account.

I'm another who did WW in the US, but started Slimming World once I moved here.  Been going for a year and 1/2 or so, and absolutely LOVE it!  I have lost over 4st.  I find it to be much easier than WW.  The meetings are a lot more fun, as well.  Of course, that is just my experience.

Although I won't be moving to London, I've been curious about the WW program in the UK since I'd like to continue my "journey."

To be honest, the meeting I attend in my small town here in North Carolina is quite uninteresting. They have topics, but they might as well be reading from the little idea book or something. When I lived in Columbus, Ohio my leader was a woman named Marie and she made it SO entertaining and worth your time. She's a motivational speaker on the side, so that could be part of it...but just her positive presence alone made me want to attend the meeting. I looked forward to it each week.

That's so important!! There are great leaders and crap leaders everywhere, unfortunately. I think it's just a case of shopping around until you find a meeting you like and a leader you click with.
