Amazon DVD rental now LoveFilm - opinions?
« on: June 28, 2008, 12:33:50 PM »
I'm not happy with this at all.

We loved Amazon DVD rental. We rarely received scratched disks, we enjoyed a 10% discount when we purchased DVDs off the website, and disks lost in the post were IMMEDIATELY re-issued without question.

We are on our second set of LoveFilm DVDs. One was scratched beyond belief and was completely unwatchable. One was scratched enough to make watching it very unpleasant. One disk was lost in the post during return - LoveFilm sent the next DVD on our list, but also required us to fill out a Royal Mail lost item form (something Amazon never required), and if we failed to fill out the form we would have been charged £10.

We also borrowed a LoveFilm DVD from a friend, and it wouldn't play on our DVD player - we had to watch it on our laptop.

And to add insult to injury, our 10% Amazon discount has been reduced to 5%.

Are there any satisfied long-time LoveFilm customers that can assure me it's actually not that bad? We're already considering cancelling - I want to know if it's worth sticking it out.
Ok, so I'm smug.

We've had Lovefilm for a long time & not too many problems.  We've had one faulty disk in the last 6 months.  Also, when something was lost in the post once, we didn't have to fill out any forms.

We've actually belonged two separate times.  The first time (a couple years ago) we had some problems with their disks but it turned out to be more a problem with our DVD player.  Since we got a new one & then rejoined, it's been fine.

Hope it gets better for you, or maybe you find a service you like better. :)

We've had LoveFilm for about a year with no problems.  Hope it goes a bit better for you.
I refuse to answer that question on the grounds that I don't know the answer.

Ok, this is exactly what I needed to hear. Thanks, both of you.

If all I heard was a flurry of negatives, we would probably have cancelled quite soon. We're not watching movies like we used to anyways... so it's got to be a good service to keep our patronage!

We'll give them awhile longer to improve!

Oh I'm sure there'll be some negatives about them if you wait long enough for more replies - lol! [smiley=laugh3.gif]

But they've been fine for us.

We have LoveFilm and haven't had any major problems. The delivery times are reasonable and we've never received a bad disc.

The priority setting, though, is pretty much worthless, at least in my experience. What they actually send to you can be quite random, and you have to have loads of films in your queue to keep new films coming. The only place that rents films near us is in the back of a newsagents, though, so I don't see us canceling anytime soon.

We usually have pretty good luck with the priority setting thingie - except my husband doesn't like to use it!  He likes to put everything on low priority & be surprised.  Although he has used it when it was a film that he really wanted needed to see... ::)  Like when he was doing a class project on Spanish Civil War related films.  However, we don't usually put new releases on top priority, so maybe it wouldn't work so well for that?

The thing that's really bugging me is that Lovefilm keep telling me how their priority system is so much better than Amazon's ranking system. I just don't see how it can be. I don't think I was ever sent anything below my 3rd choice from Amazon, and I always got my top choice if it was shown as available 'now'. I can't see how Lovefilm can offer a similar service.
