Aunt Bessies Homestyle Chips

Has anyone else who has bought these notice they give off a weird smell when you cook them? I noticed it when I bought some a few months ago but forgot and just bought some again. It doesn't seem to affect the taste, but what is it?

We bought them once or twice when I first came here, but I just didn't like them.  We've been back on McCain's ever since.  I don't remember if they smelled weird or not though. 

I almost bought some today as they were on special, but didn't know if they were any good.  I'm glad I didn't now as I can't bear anything to smell funny these days.
