Green Enchilada Sauce
« on: July 01, 2008, 02:48:02 PM »
We really miss mexican food and I make great chicken enchiladas, but I haven't been able to find green sauce.  Does anyone know if/where I can find it?  Or even find tomatillos and anaheim chilies so I can make it?  I haven't seen any in the stores that I've been to.

I feel your pain!!! It's really, really hard. I've found tinned green chiles in the past (at a specialty shop in Belfast), but they were shockingly expensive and poor quality. Don't know about tomatillos, as I don't use them in my green sauce.

The solutions I've found are:
1. Have my parents send/bring me green sauce and chiles
2. Buy fresh chiles from South Devon Chilli Farm--they actually grow NM chiles as well as Anaheims! Unfortunately, they won't be harvesting until October or so.

Dang, now I'm craving green enchiladas! :(

Oooh.  Yay!  Thanks!!  I love that you can order from these guys online, though it's only about an hour or so from me and I'd probably travel down there if I had to.  Definitely worth it!  Looks like I'm going to have to make loads of green sauce once the season starts and can it so it'll last the year.

It freezes well, too, as do whole roasted chiles. If you have a big enough freezer, that is!

The chilli farm folks are lovely to deal with, but they're not really geared up for industrial quantities of NM/Anaheim chiles, alas. And last year the chiles didn't have much heat. But it was a notoriously cool and wet summer.

Next year I might take a stab at growing my own, if I can find seeds.

The Chili Farm sells seeds and chili a chili growing kit.  They've also got a page with tips and how-to on growing your own chilies.  I think I might do it myself next year.

I have friends who grow a ton of chilies - red and green - in their greenhouse. They definitely have a lot of heat!

I never had green enchilada sauce until recently.  DH bought the green instead of the red.  I started to go to the store and get the red sauce, but decided to try the green.  It's very good.  I may just use that one from now on.

We used to get canned tomatillos from a farm shop in Faversham in Kent. Now we get them, online. You can buy tomatillo salsa online too.  The Oil & Vinegar shops have a green salsa now but I don't think it's made with tomatillos.

Making your own is best, of course, but if you dont want to do that, the advert at the top of the page for Mex Grocer will solve your problem!

I've ordered green enchilada sauce from them in the past, and despite coming from Germany (!!) it was really good.   :)

I recently found green Tabasco at a couple of stores in Bristol. Is Tabasco enchilada sauce?

Here is a website that might help:

We are a nation that has a government -- not the other way around. And this makes us special among the nations of the earth. Our government has no power except that granted to it by the people. It is time to check and reverse the growth of government, which shows signs of having grown beyond the consent of the governed.
Ronald Reagan

Polish delis have big honking glass jars of green tomatoes (tomatillos), and they are usually pretty cheap.
