Anyone have an ice cream maker?
« on: July 02, 2008, 07:45:57 AM »
My sons really want us to get one so i'm weighing up the pros and cons...Not sure if anyone here has one or could possibly recommend it?  Or is it to be another gadget equipment that gets tossed away in a cupboard somewhere..

Check out this thread: http://talk.uk-yankee.com/index.php?topic=15488.0

I have a Philips ice cream maker and it's great! I don't use it all that often, more because I don't need the calories than any other reason. If I didn't need to lose weight, I'd use it all the time. It's easy-peasy and the end result is a gazillion times nicer than any shop bought ice cream I've ever had!

If you wind up getting one and want some good ice cream making advice and recipes, Carrie's your gal. She's the expert!  :)

Thank you for that. I should've known there'd already be a thread on it somewhere here.. :)

I had one in the US and I miss it. :( Since I didn't need the calories either, I tended to make a lot of fruit sorbets, which were absolutely gorgeous and free of all the additives that go into the commercial ones. Plus you can make flavors like sour cherry or rhubarb or watermelon! (All highly recommended, by the way...)

Yes, but it's from 2005!!!! :P

I ended up buying the same machine Chary had and I did use it a few times.  But honestly, I got rid of it when we moved.

However, I'm not all that into cooking, so don't go by my experience  ;D  I think it would be great for a family with young kids.

I thought I bought mine because of you!

I did, but I don't cook much.  I made a bunch of ice cream when I first got it though and it was really good.  I even made frozen yogurt using that yogurt machine I bought which I also got rid of!!!  LOL!

Right.  All this ice cream talk is very cruel to a big fat pregnant lady who is trying to be good!  Now I feel like I won't survive the day without ice cream!

Yes, but you can justify it because you're eating ice cream for two! I don't have that excuse!  :-\\\\

I have a Panasonic model that i got from Lakeland... i used it all the time last summer, but haven't yet this year.  Think i need to remedy that this weekend!

I found an online recipe for cheesecake ice cream that is unbelievably good!

I have a magimix one, and to be honest, its easier to go out and buy a pint of ice cream, what with the making custard, cleaning up and all that crap.

I did go through a phase of making loads of it, but its in the garage now waiting until the mood strikes me. I do have a gorgeous carrot cake in the fridge now that would be delish in homemade vanilla ice-cream. And once I did make gorgeous green tea ice cream.

I had one in the States and used it all the time. My friends would challenge me with interesting flavours, which was always fun. (Never did make a bad one!)

Some of the ones I did were very simple (just whack everything in the machine and let it do the rest), and others were very complicated.

Everything was sooooo much better than what I could buy (or at least that I could afford to buy). I really want to get a machine here, as the ice cream is generally dreadful, but can't afford one.

I'm just keeping my fingers crossed that one will come up on Freecycle...

DH makes ice cream without a machine.  You just have to take it out of the freezer & stir it every so often while it's in the process of freezing.  A gadget would be nice, but as he makes decent stuff without one - one less thing to clutter up our cupboards with! :)
