The PA at my GP is American!
« on: July 04, 2008, 06:15:06 PM »
Went to my new GP yesterday and got an appointment with the PA there (apparently the new surgery is the only one outside of the Midlands that use PAs). Turns out he's from Maine, and is going back at the end of the month.

We discussed the differences in life (hot dogs, baked beans, speed of referrals), and then he ordered Xrays and blood tests to see if I have RA or something else.
Another shameless promotion for www.mclevey.com, the best place on the internet to buy art.

The senior nurser here at our practice here in rural Cumbria is American! She's from Iowa and has been here for over 20 years. She's here permanently now. I like her a lot - we chat whenever I go there.
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

Did you suggest he join UKY ? :)

There are American PA's (physician assistants) all over England.  There was a large group in Birmingham (most of us have returned to the US)but there are still at least 3, as well as about 8 others in the West Midlands area including one at the A&E in Selly Oak.  There are some in Weston Supermare, Lake District, London, and some other small town locations.  There is also about 12 US PA's in Scotland too.  There is also a new program through University of Birmingham and Wolverhampton to train locals to become PA's.  They are everywhere!!!  ;)

They might not have had the most up-to-date info at the surgery, but they were saying they're the only ones outside of the Midlands who currently have a PA.

(And this is in Weston-super-Mare.)
