Are Brits welcome?
« on: May 12, 2004, 11:21:21 PM »
I am not sure about the protocol here - are Brits welcome? I found a thread and fancied joining the discussion - especially the Iraq threads -  if only to assure Yanks that not all of us journalists are raving anti american bores - well I'm barely a journalist just write stuff for computer mag and the like.

But I enjoy many american friends, for the most part admire the culture and sincerely would like to see more yanks visit places like Shropshire.

If there are any US expats in the midlands who need any help, especially with computer related stuff please do get in touch only too happy to help if I can.

regards to you all

Jeremy Spencer

We welcome friendly people so feel free to join in the discussion.  We already have a few Brits that help us understand the cultural differences from time to time and the more the merrier!

I am glad you stopped by to say hello and hope to read some of your posts in the future.

Welcome to UKY Jeremy!

Lol, brilliant ;D Its hard to believe when all you seem to hear are bad things on the news.  I'm from CA and will be moving to Hampshire in less than five months.  To be honest its those anti-Americans that I'm dreading more than anything.  Its especially nice though to have someone you think despises you right off the bat to hand over that olive branch.

Welcome Jeremy.

Welcome!  :-*

(Kas nut- You won't encounter much anti-American-ism... More anti-Bush then anything else. I lived in Cheltenham from Sept to this past March and not once did I get any flak from people regarding the war or politics. People were curious why I was there and enjoyed hearing my opinions while they shared their own. You will enjoy your time there very much, I think!)

Jeremy, even if you weren't a Brit, I still have a soft spot in my heart for journalists. Back during the Watergate era, all of us kids wanted to be one because the profession had never before been so popular. So I went to uni armed with Woodward-and-Bernstein determination. Except none of the schools were really prepared for an onslaught of thousands wanting to break the next Watergate story. So even though they offered the degree, barely few courses were on the menu.

Good thing. I really hated writing, as it turned out. So I went into the art bit of it, with a passion for computers. Eek. I've been on a computer for more than 30 years!

Anyway, I've probably read your stuff. ;) We get all sorts of the rags.

Welcome to the site (a really nice point you made in the Iraqi prisoner thread, btw).
Married to Graham, we run our own open-source computer training company in beautiful Wiltshire out of our 1814 Georgian Regency home (a former lodging house and once featured in Antiques Roadshow)

Absolutely, welcome Jeremy, thank you for joining in. I have to say how nice it is to hear the impressions of some Brits who don't think we're all gun-toting Springer guests. ::) When we're here and all we see is negativity in the media, it's very easy to feel out of place sometimes. Looking forward to seeing you on the boards. :)

Goes ditto for me as well. This past week I expirenced my first xenophobic anti-american attack on myself from a person who posts regularly on my husband's website, for simply being an american who had a suggestion for that  board, lol. So your appearance is very much appreciated by myself :)

Trouble is she is a Bush supporter so anti-bush is the same thing but i know where your coming from I tell her every time the subject comes up there is very little anti-american-ism here despite the rep that seems to have grown around it, anyone else on here wanna back up our claims and convince the love of my life that there are lots of Brits who love Americans?  ;D

Oh and Jeremy, thumbs up to Shropshire, very nice place, when Kassie arrives in England i wanna take her there but dont know the area too well, fancy being a tour guide for a few days?  ;D
I love you Kassie,
