The most annoying expressions...
« on: July 07, 2008, 07:17:07 PM »
...hee hee!  Because you can never have too many Grievances, now can you?! ;)  Maybe the weather has me in a mood...but I thought we could use a new 'annoying' thread...

What are some expressions (figures of speech, clichés, that sort of thing - words...) that you can't stand, that get on your nerves, etc...?

Two that annoy the crap out of me:

1) When people have just eaten something and they say 'Well that filled a hole.' >:(

2) 'Game over' :-X
Ring the bells that still can ring
Forget your perfect offering
There is a crack, a crack in everything
That's how the light gets in...

'at the end of the day...'
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

The ones that annoy me most are when people say expressions wrong.  The one that makes me cringe the most?

"I couldn't be asked."

"Push the envelope"
"Too much information"
And the incorrect use of the word "literally"

(I'm sure I'll come up with more!)

That literally drives me up the wall!  ;D

The use of "pre" when the word means to do something in advance anyway e.g. pre-order, pre-book.

Acronym - when people mean an abbreviation or initials. Acronym means it makes a pronouncable word....e.g. NASA is an acronym, BBC isn't.

An American one - "I could care less" eh? That doesn't make sense, that suggests you could actually care even less about something, rather than saying "I could not care less"

Actually, the word that actually makes me want to actually go mad is actually the overuse of 'actually' in a single actual sentence. Actually, worse yet is the actual use of actually in multiple actual sentences. Actually, I am actually referring to the use by actual professionals.

That's another one people get wrong all the time!  It is supposed to be "I couldn't care less".

One more:  The word "awesome".  Overused, and rarely correctly.

When someone says "Shut up!" when really excited about something or say it out of disbelief. I always take it literally and get a little offended at first, then realize they really didn't mean for me to shut up.  :P

'Bless'. Bless what?

Also, 'passed' as a synonym for 'died'. Again, passed what? 'Passed away' is fine.

"Fair enough."

Everyone says it.  It shouldn't bother me.  I don't even know why it does.  In moderation it's not so bad, but when people use it as a signal that thery are paying attention to what I say...argh.

"My gran died, so I have to go back to the US for the funeral."
"Fair enough."
"Hey, that guy's on fire!"
"Fair enough."
"I'm going to punch you in the nose."
"Fair enough."

I like "bless" and "ta."
