Are we still on the topic of pronunciation of words, or has this gone personal?

I think this topic causes a lot of disagreements every time it comes up.  This entire thread is (all 31 pages)  has been full of personal differences of opinion.

I think only a fool would think that this post didn't imply that you being born here(living in London your entire life) somehow made you right.

I implied no such thing. If we are talking about people who are from London, then I would say that my opinion carries more weight than the opinion of people who are not from London and who have not lived in London for as long as I have.  I don't see a problem with that.

Yael...it always gets personal when Mindy and I disagree, despite her being a 'global mod', that's just how it goes.  I try to say 'let's agree to disagree', and she keeps it going by accusing me of saying things I certainly never said.

Except we weren't talking about London.  We were talking about the South where AnneR and I also live and work.  And you were the one to bring up 'living in London 31 years' first.

And Global mods are allowed to disagree with people.  It doesn't get personal everytime.  Most times I don't even bother responding.  I just took exception to being told that I didn't know what I'm talking about and that my experience must be limited to certain parts of Surrey.  And disagreeing is not accusing.  It's disagreeing.

So, as I said several posts ago, let's agree to disagree and leave it.

The one I hate the most is when Brits say they are gagging for a drink, be that tea, coffee, beer, wine etc.  Sounds to me like they are ready to vomit so I tend to step away from them.  Luckily I don't hear it very often.

I also hate the way Americans misuse the word good when they should be saying well, as in 'that pink shirt goes good with that jacket' when it should be 'that pink shirt goes well with that jacket'.  (I had a British english teacher when I was in 11th grade and he drilled that one into us)

I correct my students on this one all the time. Adverbs vs. adjectives, folks!!

And "gagging" for anything just makes me think of something else entirely!  :o

English was not my favorite subject but now I'm ready to take learn. "Wona" do an online course?
Lets see an adverb describes a verb. Can't think of an example.
I would have to look up adjective.
I know what a noun and verb is.
I hate to express my ignorance. ::)

Round my way they say 'gasping' not 'gagging'.
Thankfully.

Adverb- describes a verb (answers how/how often generally) Ex- well, often, simply, rarely.....

Adjectives describe nouns (and other adjectives)- pretty, tall, nice, smart, etc...

:)

I'm so weird that my favorite lesson is teaching basic verb conjugation in my French classes! Grammar is fun! ;D

Yes, I often hear 'gasping' (for a drink) too, but not 'gagging'.

This thread was destined to ruffle feathers from the start... after all, if someone says that they hate a certain phrase, and the next person says that same phrase all the time, they're likely to feel niggled.

Grammar is fun! ;D

It is, isn't it? And from personal experience, I've found that studying a foreign language forces you to look at grammar in ways that you gloss over as a native speaker of your own language. I had no idea what the subjunctive was until I took a French class!

Go north, young woman.  I'm hard pressed to find UK natives who do not say 'haitch', apart from my husband (who isn't from up here).  Although a British neighbour once told me in confidence that she suspected people who say 'haitch' didn't have a proper upbringing.   :P

"Haitch" is the northern pronunciation of the letter.

I often say "haitch" when using abbreviations or spelling things out, otherwise people sometimes don't understand me at first. I suppose the American accent makes it worse for them.

No, it's not. As this thread has shown, there are plenty of people in the north who pronounce the letter H correctly. And there are also plenty of people in the south who say 'haitch.' It's not regional. It's just incorrect.

Sorry. I'm feeling grumpy today.
