I aim to please!  Actually I had to look that up.  When charting, I usually say something like 'had episode of emesis'.  I may try to slip in that 'patient was emeticizing'.  Sounds a bit jazzier.

Cool!  I'm going to use 'had episode of emesis'!

This is a weird one but the word 'attractive' when said in an American accent really grates on me.

Completely agree with Mindy. The sound associated with sentimentality as described is 'awwww' and when I use it, I definitely don't mean 'ahhh'.  I use 'ahhh' to denote relief, such as 'ahhh, I really needed that drink' or even understanding ('ahhh, okay, now I see what you mean').  I use 'awww' to denote something I find something particularly sweet, cute, or considerate.

I'd say the spellings are just representative of the different vocalizations for the same sentiment.

In Britain the sentiment of "Aww" is probably more commonly expressed as "Ahh," with a distinctly different intonation than the "Ahh" sound which is used to express relief.

Yes, and I've been noticing a strange development in pronunciation of the word "student" in Americanese.  I guess I must have morphed to a more British "stew-dnt" but it seems on US TV it is pronounced as "stoo-dent" (with emphasis on the "dent")  Annoys me almost as much as "cue-pon" instead of "coo-pon"   :P

Here in Texas, it's "Do what (pronounced wut)?" and I'm VERY guilty of saying that, a LOT. :-[ :P

Hmmm, I grew up saying "cue-pon", pretty sure everyone in Philadelphia says it that way--I could be wrong though.  :-\\\\

It's often, "you wot, love?"  I really don't like this one because I have bad associations with it.  My old manager used to say it constantly to me (and believe me, there was no "love" or good feelings to be had); 9 times out of 10 because she never heard / listened to a word I said.  >:(

I say cue-pon and so so does everyone in my family, so it could be a PA thing!

I think it has become standard American pronunciation -- its just that in the UK I trained myself to say coo-pon so it just grates on my ear now.

I see.  Definitely standard in PA for generations though.  Now I'm trying to think if any American pronunciations grate on me....I probably haven't been in the UK long enough yet for that to happen.   :)
