That's interesting, we are taking a holiday in Somerset next month, so that DW can do some family research.....her great, great grandfather was born in Somerset and worked on Hindon Farm (now an organic farm) before he emigrated to the US, she will be going to the records office in Taunton.

If you are looking for good places to eat/fun things to do in Taunton that day, just ask...hubby lives in city centre and chances are if it's in town we've done it.

I might be looking for decent real ale pubs to visit whilst DW sits doing research in the records office!  ;D

For my money I like The Plough...real ale, a good selection of cider, and yummy pies. Also a dog and a fireplace to add to ye olde authenticity  [smiley=laugh4.gif] The staff is pretty friendly too. There are always a few grizzled 200-year-olds at the bar so you know it's good.

They're on Station Road, the main drag through town...here's their site:

I must admit, I didn't have the time to go through all 54 pages of this thread, so forgive me if it's already been mentioned.  I'd like to submit "no worries" for your consideration in the category of Most Annoying Expression.  Overused to the point of meaninglessness!

This has probably been posted but I hate "cheers!" so much. I had no problem with it before I started working, but hearing it all day gets to be too much. Also when people say "are you alright?" to me it's something someone asks if i'm upset but here it's like, how are you?

hahaha

I think most people here got the "what is wrong with me, do I look bad" when asked You alright?

As for Cheers - its up there with TA for me...You hear all day it must mean they are polite at least but would get annoying ;-)

You get used to the "You all right?" thing.  It's usually answered with the same question or just "Alright?" (for those still getting thrown by it).  Sort of the equivalent of "how's it going?"  But yeah, the first few months I was here, I was constantly thinking there appeared to be something wrong with me when people greeted me.

I still stumble with this one, even though I've gotten past the stage of wondering what would make them ask and running through all the 'do I look upset..tired, stressed, ill...etc..' questions in my head. I've finally settled on 'Doing fine, how are you?' as my standard. I figure it isn't how the locals might answer it, but given I'm obviously from 'elsewhere' most people go ahead and respond in their usual way and everything works out.

I hate "you're a star". what's worse is that I said it to someone today.

I still trip on it when someone asks me. I spit out "fine thanks" then forget to say anything back. I'm sure it makes me look like a snotty American  :D

I agree with Chilly on 'ta' too. I jokingly tag a 'dah' on it when BF says it. He's not amused.

Me, too! And I've not even been in the UK for almost 3 years!
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

I'm pretty sure I've posted before, but, I've been here a bit longer. My list has either changed and/or gotten longer. :D

Ta-Totally makes me cringe when co workers say it-and try to get the kids to say it! Yeesh!

You're a star/diamond/angel/darling-No I'm not! I'm just me! :P Blimey, just say thanks and be done with it!

Princess(attached to child's name)-I hate this! I love that one of the girls at my nursery responded to this by saying, "No I'm not! I'm [me]!" when a co worker said it to her.

Cheers-I've always thought this was a drinking salute. :P

No worries
