An expression I just don't get is 'then you've had it'. I have recently heard it used as 'Today will be fine, but it is going to rain the rest of the week and then you've had it.' It makes it sound as if there is impending doom in the future because of a little rain, or whatever small thing is being mentioned.

But rain does signal impending doom!  :D
Ring the bells that still can ring
Forget your perfect offering
There is a crack, a crack in everything
That's how the light gets in...

I've not heard that, I think the phrase is "and there you have it" as in, thats your lot, you have the information etc.
If they are actually saying "and then you have it", then I strongly suspect they've got the saying wrong.

Well if it's something that's upcoming you can't have had it yet, and "then you've had it" trips off the tongue easier than "and there you'll've had it"  ;)

Now that I think about it, in movies, just before something horrible happens it starts to rain or storm.  ;D

I've also heard 'and then you have it', but the person I'm thinking of who says 'and then you've had it' most often is definitely saying it as 'and then you've had it', and by her tone it is meant to be negative thing.

This isn't a British saying but it annoys me none the less.

Having talked every single day with a Englishman for a year and a half, I have picked up some words. Like bugger. I say it a lot now and I'm sure my mom doesn't mind as it's replaced the F word in my vocabularly - I didn't even know I had started to do it until my mom pointed it out one night. I don't try to use it, it just pops out.

Anyway, a friend has a habit of saying 'why are you trying to be British when you are still here?' to me a lot. EVERY time it annoys me. I'm not trying to be British, it's just one of those things that happens when you are with someone of another culture. *sigh*

rant over.

I have a lot of the same issues as I am actively trying to use some of the most common terms on a daily basis.

Although I haven't read all 63 pages of the thread, I've read quite a few and am surprised not to have seen "innit" yet.

"I'm going to the shops, innit(?)".  I don't even know if their should be a question mark there.

It is quite frankly, infuriating.  Even for a Brit!

I have noticed this on my fiance's facebook, all the Brits using X after everything. I can honestly say before my fiance I never used an x after stuff - it's how we sign our emails, xxxx - and I remember the first time I saw it on his sister's facebook.

Must be a British thing...

I'm so glad to hear this.  I use x's a lot with British friends (Facebook/email etc).  But when I made American friends, they never signed with an x, so I wasn't sure if I wasn't a close enough friend yet, or if they just didn't use x's.  I tried signing with an x with one of them once, but I didn't get one back, so figured I shouldn't continue!  My facebook wall looks a bit weird now though - lots of x's from Brits, and none from Americans!

I'd disagree on the "good" bit. "What? You mean it's well-behaved?"

Or seen my mince pie! a work of art, I tell you.

I've never used gorgeous for food, but I have been known to exclaim 'Oooh! That looks sexy!' on occasion over particularly tasty looking baked goods. You know the ones, the ooey gooey chocolaty onesor any other that probably have 3,000 calories per bite.
