Buttermilk and maple syrup
« on: July 07, 2008, 07:21:42 PM »
I was so excited to day when I saw Sainsbury's has buttermilk. I had asked my mother-in-law about where to get buttermilk, and she said she had tried to get it some years ago, but was told by a health foods store it had to be ordered two weeks in advance.

So now I'm very excited to make some buttermilk pancakes, however I've just realized we need maple syrup. I usually eat Mrs. Buttersworth in the US. Does anyone know how "Sainsbury's Maple Syrup" would compare? Or any other suggestions?

I've not tried Sainsbury's brand, but our local Tesco has a maple syrup brand that is ok.  The Tesco here carries another brand "Rowse Pure Canadian Maple Syrup" that I prefer, but the Tesco's own brand is totally do-able when they are out of the other brand.

Yes, I've seen buttermilk in Morrison's too.

It depends on what kind of maple syrup taste you're going for.  Real or imitation?
I've been so spoiled, I had real vermont-new hampshire-massachusetts maple syrup growing up and my friend always gave me a huge bottle of local New Hampshire for christmas when I lived in Florida. So anything that doesn't taste like that is disappointing to me.  I know what I'm asking for for x-mas this year!
I've never gotten food on my underpants!

Even my little Tesco sold buttermilk! It comes in smaller containers, though - not like full milk-size ones the way it does in the US, but more like large cream containers.

And I second the vote for Rowse Canadian Maple Syrup. It's yummy!  :)

Great. Thanks a lot. I'll try the Rowse. I'm really not that picky. I don't like really strong tasting syrup, and probably prefer the imitation!

I wish it came in smaller containers like that here. I never need an entire giant jug-o-buttermilk, but have to buy that much just to make a recipe calling for a small amount. :-\\\\

in that case, try the Lyle's Maple Flavour syrup, which is with the ice cream cones & toppings.  It's only 99p compared to £2.99 for the real stuff, and it's thicker and i think it tastes better.

Yes. Genau convinced me to try Lyle's (be sure to get maple flavour not regular) and my kids much prefer it to the real syrup because it tastes more like Aunt Jemima.

I agree that if you don't like the real stuff and already know you prefer imitation stuff, try Lyle's. I like really a strong pure maple-y flavour, so Rowse is the one for me!  :)

I agree with Genau the Lyle's maple flavoured syrup will be the closest to Aunt Jemima

Seems to me that I've seen the imitation stuff at Costco if that's an option for you!

Never seen the imitation maple syrup but they do have pure maple syrup, a huge jug for the price you pay for the tiny bottles bottles you find in the supermarkets

Lyles maple is yummy! I use it all the time. Sainsburys and Tesco usually have the real maple syrup, but it's costly.

Ok, thanks! Does every store carry the Lyle's Maple flavored?

I've seen it in all the normal sized supermarkets around here (Tesco and Sainsbury.)

That being said, it's hardly a staple so I'd guess you might be put of luck if you shop at one of the small supermarket offshoots (Express/Metro/Local) or live out in the sticks.
