New Diet
« on: July 08, 2008, 12:24:58 PM »
So I'm starting a diet to lose roughly about 18 pounds.
I'm doing 100 situps a day and cut out fizzy drinks..only drinking juice.
Anyone have any suggestions for me? Thanks in advance!

Although better in terms of vitamins, juice isn't really all that much better calorie-wise than soda.  Unless you are drinking diet, in which case you could drink diet soda.

I would suggest water with a little lemon juice added for flavor, or something similar.

Or, if you like fizz, get some soda water and add lemon or lime juice to it. If you really like juice, try mixing it half-and-half with water or soda water to keep the calories down.

Drink loads of water and never finish a full plate of food.  I have read if people just cut out 1/4th of every meal that would massively helps in losing weight.  And exercise!

You really need to be burning more calories that you're eating.  It's hard work but it pays off!

I'd like to lose the weight by early August if I can! So I'm doing all the situps, walking almost 2 hours a day,and not eating much. Hopefully I'll get my target!
Thanks for the water suggestions, I did drink a lot of water, but it made me feel too bloated though. Will try not too drink too much water though

I usually skip breakfast, I eat 1 (small) meal a day in the early evening.

Three small and sensible meals a day would be better!  :)

Just be careful. I can tell you from experience that eating as little as you can get away with can become addictive and lead to very costly (both in terms of your health and in terms of treatment) eating issues....  :-\\\\

Sounds like you're starving yourself.  Which means that the minute you start eating normal portions again, the weight is going to come piling back on, quick and ugly.

Though it would seem to make sense to limit calories in order to lose weight, skipping breakfast is about the worst mistake you can make and it will catch up with you and you'll stop losing... I am dieting for my summer holiday as well and went totally gung ho a couple of weeks ago and went a week on less than 900 calories a day with only having 75 for breakfast and exercising like a fiend.  At the end of the week, I had gone up 2 lbs :-X  I was so livid but I knew it was because I was being silly and choosing to ignore the old chestnut about screwing up your metabolism by going into starvation mode.... I stopped and went back to more realistic caloric intakes and larger breakfasts and lost 3 lbs in a week...

You can't skip breakfast. (If you want your metabolism to burn calories that is....)  We all know this but dieting makes us do desperate things, especially on short term dieting timeframes.

Have a little something in the morning to get your metabolism moving. :)  Sorry, lecture over!

Your BMI is 22 which is very good!  So are you just dieting to improve your appearance, rather than being overweight?

It's a good lecture, though! And an important one.

If you don't like eating anything heavy in the mornings, just have some fruit and yoghurt. It doesn't have to be typical toast, cereal, etc. But eat something!

In addition to getting your metabolism going, it helps your brain. It's hard to try and function mentally without fueling up in the morning. Seriously - it does make a difference!

yeah

usually when Im stressed. I physically cant eat anything, I could go 3-5 days without eating anything because I literally physically cant eat. My body rejects food. So during that time I lost a lot of weight, got down to almost 8 stone. Now that I'm eating again, I'm just over 9 stone and hate it. I feel really fat. I know physically I'm not overweight, but in my mind, I feel like it. I have flab and my hips are huge

If you only eat one small meal a day your body goes into starvation mode and tries to preserve all the calories it can, thus it's actually slower to lose weight that way.  Bad for you too.  Losing 18 pounds in a month would be difficult even for a supermodel.

Right. A healthy weight loss is about 1-2 lbs per week. Just think - you'll still be down a good 8 lbs at that rate! And that's nearly halfway to your goal! It's much better to do it slowly and healthily - you're far more likely to keep it off that way.
