Products you CAN'T buy in the U.K.?
« on: July 10, 2008, 01:16:36 AM »
So if you were to recommend products to pack before leaving the US what would they be? Or things you miss? I know bringing canned goods is highly impractical and I dont have any problem giving up candy/cookies/junk food from the US.

What about normal every day products?

To be more specific...can you buy CoffeeMate creamer? I think someone mentioned Rice-a-Roni. Do they not sell much packaged or boxed foods? How about tortillas? Pace Picante sauce?

Maybe the food section is better?

You'll find tortillas, soft ones both flour and corn, and premade taco shells...I never did find plain salted Doritos, though.  (Original Ranch, yes.) Plain Tostitos, I found.  They sell lots of salsa, not sure about Pace.  What they don't have in the UK is the amazing selection of crackers we have in NA.  No Triscuits, Stoned wheat thins, Wheat thins, Cheezits.  Carr's, they have.  Polish delis usually have some kind of dill pickles, but otherwise difficult to find.  I'd put a few packets of onion soup mix (if you like making the dip) and Ranch dressing mix in the shipment.

Someone else should know about the creamer and Rice-a-Roni.

You can find coffee creamer (coffee whitener) in any supermarket but I never saw any flavoured ones (French Vanilla, etc.).  And I think I bought onion soup mix at Morrison's.  But their Mexican food section was pretty small, not a lot of salsa to choose from and it was a little pricey.  One thing I noticed was cake mixes.  In the states, at any grocery store you'll find 50 different brands/varieties/flavours with frostings to match.  Where I shopped in England there were maybe 6 mixes and 2 frostings.  And chocolate chips came in very small packages.  You won't find Uncle Dan's ranch dressing mix (or Hidden Valley).  I'm not sure about Rice-a-roni but there are plenty of flavoured pasta mixes.  You say you're not a junk food lover but the biscuit/cookie aisle is great, lots of choices and some cheap prices.  And chocolate lovers are in heaven here.   :)

Hmm..  to me, coffee-mate, rice-a-roni and packaged/boxed foods *are* junk food.  :)

I've never seen 'Pace Picante' sauce, but there are other salsas you can buy, either in supermarkets or online.

Flour tortillas are *everywhere*  ... they are often just called 'wraps' here.
Corn tortillas are a bit more difficult to find... usually have to be bought online from places like Lupe Pintos of Mex Grocer.   However, in supermarkets, Old El Paso do a 'corn tortilla' that is like a combination of corn and flour... has a semi-coarse texture like corn, but is soft and foldable like flour, which i love and prefer to 'real' corn tortillas now.

I do rice-a-roni homemade, from a recipe I found online. Super yummy, and easy as well. Ditto for scalloped potatos, another of my favorite 'boxed' foods.  :D

There are lots of yummy other foods here that you can't get in the states too.  I still have fun shopping for new things.  I don't eat a lot of junk like rice a roni or mac and cheese, so I can't help you there though.

If you had to bring one thing, bring taco seasoning. The stuff here tastes like curry.

I second the curry tasting taco seasoning.  Sloppy joe seasoning is also one of the few things I bring back and also powdered malt.  I have seen lightly salted Doritos in most grocery stores.  Most other things I have found substitute for or just live without.  Oh, many people really prefer Crisco to what you can get here, so if you are a big Crisco user stick some of that in your shipping container.

or make your own... that way, you can make it taste exactly as you like it!

I'd bring Neosporin, if you use it.
And powdered buttermilk.

Can you post a link for the rice-a-roni recipe?

Coffemate does a line of flavoured powdered creamer now.

There are lots of different and interesting products here.
