Must-See Sights of the United Kingdom
« on: July 11, 2008, 03:40:06 PM »
In your opinion, what are some of the abolute 'must-see' destination in the UK that every American should make it a point to see?  I know answers will be highly biased by opinion, but I am just curious.

I thought that the city of Bath was wonderful, also Edinburgh. There is plenty to see in London with all the famous landmarks, museums and such. I guess if you have certain interests, you can include those in 'must sees'. I'm a Jane Austen fan, so I made a point of visiting historic sites surrounding her life. I love Shakespeare so a play at the Globe was important.
We are a nation that has a government -- not the other way around. And this makes us special among the nations of the earth. Our government has no power except that granted to it by the people. It is time to check and reverse the growth of government, which shows signs of having grown beyond the consent of the governed.
Ronald Reagan

If I could see only one thing, it'd be the Tower of London. No contest.

Stratford-upon-Avon, Oxford, Cambridge, Warwick castle, Windsor Castle, Bath, and don't forget the British countryside.

I'd stay away from cities altogether, but that's just me! Well, I might go to Bath. That seems a popular choice!

I went to the Peak District in May.  It was wonderful.  If you love going on scenic walks through rolling hills, filled with sheep and cattle, and enjoy visiting small towns over 400 years old....definitely a place to go.

A bit off the wall but Portmeirion is Wales is worth a look - those familiar with the 60's show The Prisoner will know it.

I have a long list of "must sees" when I visit this Fall.  My list might be a bit silly to most, and I know Tim's got a few plans up his sleeve for a few of the things I want to do.  It's worth mentioning that I'm a huge Harry Potter and Doctor Who/Torchwood fan, so some of the things listed are related to those interests.  I visited London when I was 17, so most of the London attractions are off the list, even though I'm sure I'll at least be in London for a day.

The list includes:

Stonehenge
Stratford-Upon-Avon
Platform 9 3/4
London Eye
Hogwarts! The viaduct! Hogsmeade!
Castles!
Doctor Who shop (near east ham tube station)
Oxford
Bronte Museum
Rugby Match
A craft/scrapbooking store
Doctor Who museum (in Blackpool)
Hovercrafts
Isle of Wight
Cardiff/Wales
Jersey
Sussex

And I'm open to suggestions, too. Some of these things I know I won't get to do, but they're still on the list for future references, and some of the locations are due to wanting to visit friends that live in those areas.

Cardiff/Wales

There's a lot more to Wales than Cardiff! Actually, aside from St. Fagan's (which is amazing!), I don't really love Cardiff. Get out into the countryside and do some hiking on the Pembrokeshire coast path!  :)

Based on some of the pictures in Chary's 365, take her advice!  It's definitely gone to the top of my must-see list! :D

Tim's got a plan of driving through the Brecon Beacons on our way down to Cardiff, I think, so I'll see plenty of countryside :D   (although the Torchwood fan in me doesn't want to go to the Brecon Beacons....I told him if I get eaten by cannibals it's all his fault!)

The Brecon Beacons are lovely! Do you like books? If so, you must stop in Hay-on-Wye.  :)
