London Neighbourhoods
« on: July 11, 2008, 03:55:42 PM »
For those of you who know London well, I could use some assistance.

Which London neighbourhoods or Home County commuter towns would match the following description:

1.) Rail access to central London, The Westend, The City, etc. within 45 minutes at the most by rail/tube.

2.) Leafy green with lots of trees.

3.) Good and active neighbourhood High Street with plenty of thriving shops and services such as libraries, cinemas, pubs, restaurants, etc.  A real village like atmosphere.

4.) Safe and relatively crime free streets.

5.) Not crazy expensive or economically prohibitive like in such elite areas as Hemptead, St. John's Wood, Virginia Water, Ascot, Elmsbridge, Esher, etc..  Basic British middle-class will do, where most of your neighbours are teachers, solicitors, accountants, civil servants, etc., and not Russian millionaires or footballers.  At the same time I don't want to live in an area rife with street crime and violent crackheads.  Just a nice comfortable homelike place with lots of shade trees, shops, and relative stability with reasonably easy access to the heart of London.

Thanks!

I don't live in London but have friends in Barnes, East Sheen, and New Malden, all of which are very nice.

Chiswick!
If you can't say something nice, say something constructive.  If you can't say something nice or constructive, go away.

Kingston upon Thames - there is another tread on here somewhere about it as several forum memebers had lived there

Seconded!  Kingston was my first thought when I read the OP. :-D  I can't praise it enough, personally...

I'll give some North London suggestions then....Hampstead, Finchley,  Tuffnell Park.

I second.
I lived in East Finchley (or as my SIL calls it "Hampstead Garden Suburb"), then Finchley Central.  Loved it.  Only thing I would say slightly lacking is an interesting High Street, but there are still lots of good local shops.
West Hampstead is very nice also, with a great High Street.

I love W. Hampstead and would also suggest Golder Green.

Third vote for the Finchleys.  East Finchley is my favourite, I think it has a more villagey feel.   It has a small (sort of famous) cinema - The Phoenix.
A couple of nice pubs - The White Lion and Bald Face Stag.
A small supermarket and a general homegoods store - Budgeons and Amy's respectively.
A Couple of nice restaurants -  Cochin (Indian) and Va Pensiero (Italian).
A Costa Coffee, as well as independent cafes and bakeries.
It's located on the northern line and takes about 35-45 mins door to door from East Finchley to Moorgate (City).  I am sure a journey into the west end would be comparable, if you didn't have to switch lines.
I never felt unsafe walking home from the tube late at night.  You didn't see groups of youths hanging about.  There is a fairly large council estate nearby, but you don't hear too much about trouble etc happening.  It's on the far end of the town/village, so probably not where you would want to be as it's about a 25 minute walk to the station.

I paid 1100 GBP per month for a good size 3 bed (2 good double rooms and a small box single room), with a garden and large eat in kitchen.  There is a local park and a pretty good sense of community, i.e. small local charities and community newspaper and a couple of community fairs/events each year.
