Cella, get used to people asking you if you have a cowboy hat when you move over, LOL. I don't have a Texas accent, but because the word "ya'll" slips out sometimes, I get ribbed for being a cowgirl. The English love cowboys, so I just go with the flow. David thinks I should get a cowboy hat for the next portrait he does of me for our site, lol. Not likely.
When you meet with potential photographers, make sure you get to look at a couple of complete weddings, not just the same things they have on their website. We can only put so much content on a website, so traditionally what you see are our personal favorite images,, rather than a complete wedding, which will usually take place in all kinds of different lighting situations. This way you can see how capable they are in low light situations, versus very bright sunlit, outdoor weddings, which are actually very challenging.
I have not heard of Evoke, but there must be thousands of photographers in Houston, which is why it's good to get referrals. It's always a good idea to meet with more than one photographer, usually 3 will give you an idea of the style you want, and if you can get on with the photographer. You will spend the most important day of your life with that person, so you want to be sure you can stand to have them around, LOL.
Here's the link to a friend of mine, Mike Fulton. He is very well known amongst the photographic community, and he does workshops for other photographers all over the US and is a keynote speaker at WPPI. He's one of the top 10 wedding photographers in the US. The guy has skills
Feel free to mention you know me if you do contact him. He also has curley whirly fetish, LOL. I can't say enough wonderful things about him, I've known him since I got started, about 5 years ago. He and his partner, Cody, are the funniest two guys around.
http://www.tricoastphoto.com/Mike's girlfriend, Suzy also does weddings on her own, but also shoots sometimes with Mike and Cody if she isn't booked. She also is a speaker at many photographic conferences around the US. The girl rocks
http://www.suzymin.com/Also, Jesus Tirso, of Decca Photography. Another great guy, and very talented photographer.
http://www.deccaphotography.com/All of these are amazingly talented, and the nicest people you could want to meet. I know them all personally, but also have great respect for their work professionally.
I'd even throw my hat in the ring, because it would be a great excuse to go to Houston and visit my two daughters, lol. But unfortunately I have commitments that month.
We have to have a Texas gathering when you get moved over!
Seriously, any weddingy advice you need, just ask, I do about 30 wedding a year, and have seen it all! LOL
