Submit P86 on my own or wait for HMRC to send it to me?
« on: July 16, 2008, 01:04:27 PM »
Hey everybody,

I just got here from the US and my employer will be paying me this month.  I'm curious as to whether I should submit the P86 I downloaded off the Internet myself, or just wait for HMRC to send it to me? The form says "return this to the tax office that sent it to you."

I'd take professional advice.

The questions are designed to confuse.

You need to decide if you will be resident, ordinarily resident or domiciled in the UK & if you will qualify for detached duty relief.

The exact words you use will influence these choices.  They will also affect any claims you make to away from home deductions, foreign earned income exclusions and State residency in the US.

Get the words right and you could save thousands of pounds/dollars.
